Greetings from the Frances McClelland Institute, 

March has been an incredible month here at the
Frances McClelland Institute for Children, Youth and Families. We are excited to share recent updates from the Institute including our first Community Conversation, the Turbeville Speaker Series, graduate student success, and new research from the Institute.

 
FMI hosted our first Community Conversation this month which was co-sponsored by our community partners at the Primavera Foundation and featured national neighborhood expert, Dr. Rebecca White. The event was entitled “A Community Conversation: South Tucson Supporting Health and Resilient Youth.” This conversation was held at the Las Abuelitas Community Center where forty-four people came together to discuss research on neighborhoods, and learn about how communities, like the City of South Tucson, are doing a great job raising their kids. The event was a huge success, and we look forward to hosting more Community Conversations next year where we can share our research with the community.

We had our third Turbeville Speaker Series of the semester with Dr. Rebecca White, Associate Professor of Family and Human Development in the Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University. Dr. White presented her research entitled "New Approaches to Neighborhood Effects Scholarship for a New America." If you missed her presentation, you can watch it below, or visit our website. Our next Turbeville Speaker Series will be on Friday, April 14, from 1:15 to 2:30pm in room 402. Dr. Jina Yoon, Professor of Disabilities and Psychoeducational Studies in the College of Education at the University of Arizona, will be presenting her research entitled, "The Role of Teachers in Peer Victimization: Implications for School Based Prevention and Intervention.” We hope you all will join us for the final Turbeville Speaker of the semester.
 
Lastly, we would like to congratulate FSHD doctoral student, Chandni Parikh, for recently accepting a post-doctoral fellowship to begin August 1, 2017 at the University of California Davis MIND Institute. Chandni will be working on several grant funded projects that focus on very young children with autism, infant diagnosis, and recurrence risk as well as a prospective investigation that follows high-risk infants from birth through age 3. Congratulations, Chandni. We are so proud of you!

Research from the Institute
Dr. Andrea Romero, Director of the Frances McClelland Institute, Dr. Russell Toomey, chair of the Youth Development and Resilience Initiative, and Dr. Brandy Piña-Watson from Texas Tech University recently had an article published in the Journal of Latina/o Psychology entitled "When Is Bicultural Stress Associated With Loss of Hope and Depressive Symptoms? Variation by Ethnic Identity Status Among Mexican Descent Youth."

In a new study with 522 Mexican descent adolescents, it was found that youth who are less aware of their ethnic identity reported the highest rates of hopelessness. Depressive symptoms and hopelessness were also reported by youth who felt more stress from navigating between the U.S. culture and their heritage culture. These findings provide insight into national trends of higher rates of depressive symptoms and suicidality among Latinx adolescents.
