What are you passionate about?

Hello, lovely friend. How are you?
I've been thinking a lot about passion lately. This past weekend I watched The Rider. It's the story of a horse trainer and rodeo cowboy whose skull is crushed by a bucking bronco. He nearly dies and doctors warn him not to ride again. Although I am not into the rodeo scene, I can imagine what it must be like to be told you can't do what you're most passionate about.
How would I face each day knowing I could no longer paint or garden or write?

The other day I came across a question in an advice column of the current issue of Spirituality and Health Magazine. The person writing in asked about how she could discover her life's passion. The answer suggested that a week-long silent retreat with no books, internet, tv or contact with the outside world would make her passion clear.

I'm not sure what I think about that answer, but I do think that turning inward can help us understand who we truly are. It's complicated, though, and over time we change and grow. 8 years ago I was only just beginning to paint. I wouldn't have considered watercolors a passion then. It makes me wonder how I will have changed and grown in another 8 years.

What are YOU passionate about? Do you struggle with figuring it out?

I'm having a studio clear-out sale

You may have seen on Instagram or my blog that I've been rearranging, cleaning and reorganizing my studio. As part of making room for new pieces and endeavors, I'm having a sale of some of my paintings and prints.

You can shop the sale paintings on my website here.

There's also a selection of original paintings and prints on sale in my Etsy shop. The discounted prints are being retired, so if you've had your eye on one of them, now's your last chance.

my fabric is also on sale!

Spoonflower, the company that produces the fabric I design, is offering 50% off fat quarters through Thursday.
Each of my tea towel calendars is designed as a fat quarter. If you sew it's easy to hem the raw fabric to make it into a tea towel. They're great gifts. The sale includes all of my fabric designs and I think I'm going to buy some in celosia velvet and make a couple pillows.

If you sew with my fabric, I'd love to see what you create!

I think it's important to remember that our passions don't need to be BIG. They don't need to be public, either. Each of us has a unique gift to give to the world. Often our gift is a work-in-progress. I often feel as if I'm still figuring out my art. I have to remind myself not to become discouraged when I'm in the messy middle.
Please don't be discouraged if your passion feels small or not fully developed or quiet. Sometimes passions are obvious and sometimes they're more subtle. If you're struggling, give yourself time and space to discover yours. The world becomes a dark place when people don't (or aren't allowed) to pursue their passions.

Thanks for being here. Wishing you joy, always,
