Hi <<First Name>>

With the 2015 culls behind us and having had chance to catch our collective breath, we held our first post cull general meeting late last month.

The meeting was well attended and gave us the opportunity to take stock of what we have achieved so far and to start planning for the 2016 culls.  With possible further roll out to new areas, including Devon/Cornwall we certainly have got our work cut out. But we're now a strong experienced group and we're as committed as ever.  If you haven't got actively involved so far, it's never too late and you will make a difference.

Badger facts

If you've had this newsletter delivered straight to your inbox, you very likely already know a great deal about badgers. But since we've had around 250 recent additions to the mailing list who may not know so much, here are some interesting facts about the animal that we're so committed to protecting.
This easy to read article gives a lot of general information about all types of badgers.

Somerset Badger Group

While Somerset Badger Patrol and Somerset Against The Badger Cull are working specifically to protect badgers from being culled, Somerset Badger Group is working 24/7, 365 days a year to help them in other ways too.  This includes vaccinating, rescuing, pursuing cases relating to badger persecution, educating the public about badgers and helping people with any badger related issues.

This short video shows how successful the group's vaccination project has been.
96 adults and 32 cubs have been vaccinated this year bringing the group's grand total to 364.

Government refuses to release report into whether badger cull is a waste of money

DEFRA said it was 'in the public interest' not to tell the public whether the slaughter has been worth the cost.

The Government has blocked the release of a report into whether its badger cull is a waste of money.

The major analysis, held by the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, is being kept from the public despite requests for its release under transparency rules.

Wildlife crime

Wildlife crime is a tricky area but Police Wildlife Crime officers do care and since wildlife crime is often associated with other crime it is not something that should be ignored.  Somerset Badger Group has put out some great advice on what to do if you come across a wildlife crime that either is being or has been committed.  If you need help, you can contact the group 07850 604 585.

Retail therapy

As we head toward the middle of November, it's time to start thinking about Christmas. If you've got badger loving family and friends to buy for, you'll find there's a surprising number of badger gifts available online.  The items pictured below are all avaible from Zazzle but there are plenty of other sites to check out too (although we're not suggesting you'd want any badger hair shaving brushes!).

Sam Cannon artwork

You'll probably remember we mentioned in the October newsletter that we had commissioned some artwork from Sam Cannon and that Sam had very kindly donated a piece especially for Somerset Against The Badger Cull (the piece is shown opposite).

A short initial run of blank greetings cards and reproductions of the print is currently on order and it is hoped that the cards will be ready to sell at £2.00
each or £5.00 for 3, plus post and packing, within the next couple of weeks. The prints should be available a little later.  If you're interested in buying any cards or prints, please contact Somerset Against The Badger Cull.

There's a couple of events coming up that you may be interested in digging out your boots for!
