Clayton Valley Charter High School News
October 8 - 14, 2018
Dear CVCHS Families,

This Friday, October 12th, will mark the end of the first quarter of the school year! Late last week, the  CVCHS volleyball and football teams not only won their contests, but they also expanded breast cancer awareness in their Pink Games. Moving into this week, Monday is a student free day. While students are relaxing, our teachers will be participating in a Data Day during which they will be looking at student test data to inform future instruction. Teachers have developed common assessments that will measure student’s first quarter progress toward established learning targets. In addition to quality conversations about instruction, the review of the data will allow our teachers to adapt instruction immediately, rather than wait months for the results from Advanced Placement and state testing. This will be our first Data Day of the year and we hope to have another in January. It is through these activities that we are able to continue improving instruction and student performance at Clayton Valley Charter.

Go Eagles,

Jeff Anderson
Principal

Happy Monday Eagle families,

As you know, today is a professional development day for our staff. Students will not be on campus. Instead of classrooms full of students, our teachers will be reviewing the results achieved by their students so far in the year. After looking closely at the results, teachers will work in their subject teams (i.e. Algebra 1, English 9) and take the time to make adjustments to their planning and teaching to ensure any gaps are closed and best practices are implemented. One of the unique features of being a charter school is flexibility and today is a prime example of that. We are very excited that today we get a chance to step back and see where our students are succeeding and where we can improve our practice to ensure more students reach success.

In the past two weeks, your students have completed assessments in all their classes - in fact, CVCHS is the first school we know of in the county to have completed a round of online practice state tests this early in the year. Our seniors even took a practice English placement exam for Diablo Valley College to give them the experience of taking a college level assessment early in the school year. While practicing assessments is great, we are doing this early enough in the school year so we can make any adjustments needed before the students take the actual state, AP or college entrance test. While today is a day off for students, it is a valuable day of work for our staff as we look to serving your children with even higher levels of instruction starting tomorrow.

Thank you,

Jim Scheible
Executive Director
