Social Business

Cover page of strategy document

Innovate Together

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently published a new strategy entitled Innovate Together, to promote social and inclusive economic development. The CERISE Social Business Scorecard (SBS) is cited in proposal #3 as a way to identify social businesses using transparent criteria and thus improve access to capital.

AIDR refines its concept of Development Enterprises

In the last 12 months, CERISE has audited 6 African NGOs, members of AIDR network, using SBS. Results, recommandations and actions plans are available online (in French only). CERISE will present audit findings and facilitate discussions around the implementation of recommendations at the upcoming General Meeting in Cotonou, Benin. The goal is help AIDR refine its concept of Development Enterprises and initiate a new phase of support to AIDR members.

Business models in Social Businesses

CERISE, in partnership with GRET, is launching a study of the business models of social businesses that benefit from the support of one key stakeholder (venture philanthropists, big corporations, NGOs). We're looking to better understand these partnership dynamics when it comes to running a double or triple bottom line company. The study will serve as a basis for discussions with the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the role public institutions can play to support the burgeoning social business sector.

Regulators endorse social performance standards

Regulators in Nicaragua and Philippines have recently included social performance standards in regulation. In Nicaragua, CONAMI adopted a resolution defining criteria for social performance audits, based largely on the Universal Standards and SPI4 indicators.  Read more about Nicaragua in this SPTF article. In the Philippines, the Microfinance NGOs Act also explicitly urges NGOs to "have an institutionalized process of translating social mission into practice," with a tax incentives for accredited Microfinance NGOs.
