Unprecedented Galling Resistance of 316L after Expanite Surface Hardening
Galling, or adhesive wear, is a pervasive problem for stainless steels, of which the soft 300 series are notoriously prone. In an on-going effort to increase its database of engineering data, Expanite recently conducted the ASTM G98 Standard Test Method for Galling Resistance of Materials on AISI 316L, with and without Expanite surface treatment. The results were remarkable, and challenge the conventional wisdom that a 'hardness differential' in a material couple is required to resist galling.
Above is shown a picture of a mating couple with two SuperExpanite-treated surfaces of 316L. Galling is completely mitigated beyond the yield strength of the material.
Expanite is constantly expanding our portfolio of patents. Most recently, two new patents have been granted.
One patent covering the SuperExpanite process has been granted in China, and another patent covering the Expanite Low-T process has been granted in Japan.
Furnace arrives at the new Expanite production facility in Germany
The opening of the new Expanite treatment in Frickenhausen near Stuttgard is getting closer with the arrival of all the furnaces and other equipment.
Technicians are now working to get everything up and running for the opening in Q2 2016 The center will ensure that our customers from all over central and southern Europe keeps getting the same high quality service and fast turn around time they are used to today from our Danish facility even when the number of customers increases.
