First Growth, Lafite Rothschild is unquestionably one of the world's great wines but sadly it is priced beyond the reach of most wine-lovers. That's why the Lafite Rothschild family decided to create a new wine series, where each wine would be the epitome of the appellation it came from, at an affordable price. They've more than achieved that with their Reserve Speciale Pauillac and I've been a fan for several vintages. The impressive 2020 has just been released and I can't recommend it highly enough. It is an incredibly sophisticated and accomplished wine for the price. There are only 100 cases for the UK, of which we have 10. Last year's 2019 release sold out in next to no time.

The nose is immediately and unmistakably Pauillac. Intensely fragrant and pure blackcurrant aromas are joined by black cherry, blood orange, nutmeg, ginger and a graphite streak. The palate displays the same degree of purity and freshness. Packed with autumnal berries, a solid core of dense dark plum and a very long cherry and rosewater finish. This is darker, more powerful and brooding than the easier going 2019. The bold, fine tannins play a key role in the impressive structure. Its pedigree is clearly apparent, with emphasis on terroir and vintage character at the fore. Decant a few hours if drinking now. Drink now-2030+
