Renato Ratti Barolo

2017 Release

"Renato Ratti was, until his premature death in 1988, one of the prime movers of modern Barolo, not in the sense of radically abbreviated maceration and barrique ageing but in that of elimination of oxidation and other defects which, when Ratti began in 1965, were all too prevalent in the Albese".
Nicolas Belfrage MW, 'Barolo to Valpolicella'

I first tasted a Renato Ratti Barolo in the mid-nineties; I think it was an '82 or '83. I remember being impressed by the length and refinement. Fast forward to the present day and I've just tasted the latest release of Ratti's flagship Barolo Marcenasco; it's even more impressive than I remembered. Ratti's approach to winemaking helped lay the quality foundations that ultimately resulted in Barolo receiving DOCG status and the wines produced here continue to be benchmarks for the region.

This is so perfumed and beautiful with cherries, strawberries and dried flowers that follow through to a medium to full body with firm, fine tannins and a long, energetic finish. All about length and finesse.
96 Points, James Suckling

After a couple of hours in the decanter the Marcenasco opens to reveal a gorgeously seductive nose of fragrant ripe red and black cherry, married with intense lavender. There's great purity and focus. Passion fruit and jasmine join as the bouquet opens in the glass. Bright and lifted on the palate, this has great tension. Fleshy, ripe black plum, more passion fruit, cola, and succulent red cherry form a core of complex fruit. This is backed by confident, yet supple tannins, vigorous acidity and an edgy minerality that lends precision. The concentration is impressive because it is so well balanced with all the other components. The overall effect is harmonious and unforced. As much as it can be thoroughly enjoyed now, I can see this ageing gracefully for years. 2022-2046+

Very floral with lavender, violets and dark fruit. Medium-to full-bodied with tannins that build on the palate, particularly the middle palate. Very long and intense. Transparent fruit and evident terroir here. Try after 2025.

2017 Renato Ratti, Barolo Rocche Dell'Annunziata

£379.00 per 6 Bot Case, in bond

Such subtlety and refinement to this young Barolo with dried strawberries, fine tannins and a citrus undertone. Medium body. Extremely dusty and polished. Clean finish. Drinkable now, but better after 2023.
95 Points, James Suckling
