Chateau Sansonnet
Saint Emilion Grand Cru

"Don't miss it"! Jeb Dunnuck
"flat-out delicious" - Antonio Galloni

Prior to the start of the 2020 Bordeaux en primeur campaign, critics have been releasing their in-bottle reviews of the 2018 wines. There haven't been too many surprises but one wine that caught my eye was the excellent value Ch. Sansonnet. This Grand Cru St Emilion had already received many plaudits when tasted as a barrel sample and now it is in bottle, at least three influential critics have bestowed a score at the top end of their initial estimate.

Neal Martin refers to Sansonnet as a fast-rising estate and since the Lefevre family took over in 2009, it has certainly been a property to watch. The focus is entirely on producing the best possible wine. To this end, a number of high profile figures have been involved its development, including Michel Rolland, Jean Luc Thunevin (Valandraud), and Stephane Derenoncourt.

This estate has been on fire of late and that doesn't appear to have changed with the 2018 Château Sansonnet. Revealing a dense purple hue as well as a young, unevolved bouquet of pure crème de cassis, graphite, crushed violets, bouquet garni, chocolate, and distinct chalky minerality, it delivers remarkable purity, full-bodied richness, silky tannins, and flawless balance. A wine that builds slowly with time in the glass, offering a beautiful mix of richness, elegance, and length, it's as good, if not even better than the 2016. Don't miss it! 2024-2044

The 2018 Sansonnet is super-impressive right out of the gate. In recent years, Sansonnet has been opulent. The 2018 captures all of that richness but also has an extra kick of vibrancy that works so well in balancing things out. The style is still concentrated, and there is plenty of new oak, but it all works so well together. Inky red fruit, chocolate, plum, rose petals and spice linger on the exotic finish. The 2018 is so expressive today. Moreover, it is flat-out delicious. 2026-2043

Blackberry, black truffle, red tile and walnut on the nose. Full-bodied with a very dense, polished palate of ripe, firm tannins and beautifully pure fruit. Transparent and gorgeous. This will age nicely. Try after 2024.

Sansonnet comprises a single bloc of vines, covering 7ha of prime St Emilion plateau, next to Trotte Vieille and not far from Pavie Macquin and Troplong Mondot. Production is typically a modest 2800 cases per year.
