Metis Sauvignon Blanc
Klein Constantia, with Pascal Jolivet

South Africa’s Klein Constantia has been renowned since the 17 Century for its legendary dessert wine, Vin de Constance but in more recent times it has established a fine reputation for dry wines, too.

Metis is a Sauvignon Blanc created through a collaboration between Klein Constantia and Pascal Jolivet, one of the most dynamic producers of the Loire Valley.

Grapes are hand harvested from one of the highest situated vineyards in the estate. They are wild fermented in stainless steel tanks and allowed to mature on fine lees for 12 months.

The result is a terroir expressive wine that punches well above it’s modest price. I've tasted a 30 year old Sauvignon Blanc from Klein Constantia, that was in impressively good form. With the benefits of modern practices and significant investment, this new release comes highly recommended.

The 2017 Metis Sauvignon Blanc is winemaker Matt Day’s "minimal interference" Sauvignon Blanc, made with no SO2 at crushing, wild fermentation and 12 months of lees contact. It has an engaging, complex bouquet of nettle, pressed flower, grass clipping and petrichor scents that are very well defined. The palate is balanced with a fine bead of acidity. I find greater harmony in this Metis compared to previous vintages, and certainly more composure toward the finish, where hints of passion fruit and orange pith marry with the gooseberry and malic notes. Just a superb Sauvignon Blanc. 2020-2029

Often the pick of the range of extensive range of Sauvignon Blancs at Klein Constantia, this lightly wooded white was inspired by Loire winemaker, Pascal Jolivet, who still consults for the project. Peppery, nettley and mineral-focused, with subtle flinty undertones.

Metis (/ˈmiːtɪs/; Greek: Μῆτις - "wisdom," "skill," or "craft"), in ancient Greek religion, was a mythical Titaness belonging to the second generation of Titans.

This South African / French venture is depicted in the flower on the label - a hybrid of the South African Protea and French Iris.
