2018 Ashbourne Pinotage

Hemel en Aarde

Anthony Hamilton Russell's Ashbourne Pinotage takes South Africa's flagship red grape variety to new heights. Where his Southern Right provides refreshing elegance and delicacy, the Ashbourne is altogether more serious and age-worthy. If you've yet to be convinced by Pinotage, this is the wine to do it.

ETA 4 weeks.

2018 Ashbourne Pinotage

£179.00 per 6 Bot Case, in bond

Blood orange, ginger, cranberry, honeysuckle, thyme. Full-blooded and viscous. Black plum, intensely fragrant violets, a tropical passion fruit vibe. Well-integrated oak. Velvety, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity. Confident and densely packed with generous helpings of fresh, ripe plum and black cherry. Lingering blueberry. Pair with Boerewors or a hearty steak. Better in 2-3 years and could be matured longer. This has all the positive hallmarks of a spicy Pinotage, with none of the quirkiness of old. Be sure to give this at least 2-3 hours in the decanter. The second half of the bottle was even better the next day. Now-2031+

Made from a site planted in 1996 to make a single vineyard Pinotage - quite a bold move at the time by Anthony Hamilton Russell - Ashbourne was not produced between 2011 and 2015 and includes some new material in 2018. Grippy, firm and serious, it's a very ambitious red with some spice from the addition of stems, blackberry and red berry fruit and fine oak. Bravo! 2022-28
