Napa Valley

"One of the top-of-the-charts, special, rare superstars of the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wine scene is Lokoya". - Robert Parker

The 2019 vintage with its wet winter, cool spring, mild summer has given the wines energy, freshness, and balance. No fierce heat spikes in the summer, with temperatures ranging between 23℃ and 29℃. Allowing the fruit to hang for an extended period until harvest - beginning for Lokoya on 1st November. Straight out of the gate they are approachable, but with complex layers of dark fruit. Make no mistake, these wines whilst thrilling now will cellar for decades and many winemakers are hailing 2019 to be one of the standout vintages of the decade.

I tasted the 2019 Lokoya wines recently. It's hard to pick a favourite, as they all express their terroir in a unique but equally impressive way. They have have some of the finest polished tannins I have ever encountered. Their powerful intensity is matched by the kind of remarkable elegance and freshness that has been so perfected by the great estates of Bordeaux. I can see why Jeb Dunnuck compares the Mount Veeder to Chateau Latour. Production is tiny at typically 500-1000 cases of each.

Another riveting wine, the 2019 Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon has a Château Latour-like stature and regalness, with full-bodied richness and incredible concentration, as well as structure, on the palate. Cassis, blueberry liqueur, lead pencil shavings, crushed stone, and graphite notes all define the nose, and it hits the palate with incredible power and opulence, yet stays pure, flawlessly balanced, and has a finish that won't quit. This is as brilliant as Cabernet gets, and Carpenter is clearly playing with the best in the business. Give bottles 4-5 years if you can and it will cruise for 30-40 years. 2025-2065

It opens up beautifully with time in the glass, and while it has classic Mountain structure and concentration, it also has a wealth of fruit and texture, and unquestionably offers pleasure even today. Also from two sites, the 2019 Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is all Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 87% new French oak. It's another deeply hued Cabernet revealing a stunning bouquet of ripe red and black plums, graphite, bouquet garni, tobacco, and sappy flowers. Rich, full-bodied, gorgeously balanced, and lengthy on the palate, it deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for 20-25 years. As with most Spring Mountain releases, it shines just as much for its complexity, nuance, and balance as its power and richness. 2025-2051

Established in 1995, Lokoya is a collection of four distinct Cabernet Sauvignons from four of Napa Valley’s most celebrated mountain appellations: Mount Veeder, Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain, and Diamond Mountain. These limited-production wines are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with native yeast, and bottled unfined and unfiltered, resulting in the purest expression of place.

The grape variety and winemaking for the four wines remain consistent, allowing the vineyard sites to shine with the climate, soils, and sunlight all fully expressed in the glass. Given the high elevation of the sites, the vineyards demand constant attention. The deep understanding of the vineyard trajectory in each vintage comes from Winemaker Christopher Carpenter’s years of expertise. Intervention is kept to a minimum both in the vineyard and in the cellar, preserving the unique terroirs.

There will be no Lokoya wines from 2020, because of smoke taint.
