Yalumba, The Signature

The current vintage of Yalumba's 'The Signature' is amongst the finest I've tasted from this regular favourite. 2015 was an outstanding vintage for many producers in South Australia and this quintessential Barossa blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz is up there with the best. A far cry from the fruit-bombs that have put many off the category, The Signature is a serious and age-worthy wine that offers astonishingly good value.

I love the nose of this wine; there is so much going on. Cinnamon, ginger, dried fruits & nuts. The palate is ripe and zesty, with racy acidity. It is loaded with citrus, summer berries, pomegranate, and a core of dark chocolate.  Plum skins and a long peppery note enter on the finish. There is plenty of grip from structured, ripe tannins. The wine unfolds slowly and shows best 24 hours later. Whilst there is plenty to enjoy now, as those tannins soften and the fruit unfurls, there will be much more to experience. 2029-2046.

This has a very attractive, blackberry and red-plum nose with some leafy elements, as well as plenty of oak spice and hints of black tea. This has a fleshy, supple, bold and round palate. Very supple, sleek and long. Silky, yet sturdy. Very drinkable now and will last a good two decades. A vinous slam dunk! Drink or hold.

Beautifully polished with burnished tannins and fully integrated varietal ingredients. Quite aromatic with a hint of one of the spices in a Fisherman's Friend throat lozenge and sweet leather but overall delightfully subtle. Very long and particularly throat-warming. Not the sort of wine you would sip without food but a triumph for those looking for something to accompany a strongly flavoured dish – or even blue cheese. 2018-2030
