2020 Greywacke
Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

I just tasted the current release of Kevin Judd's benchmark Marlborough Sauvignon and it's a beauty. It was one of James Suckling's Top Value Wines of 2020 and Master Sommelier, Cameron Douglas recently awarded it a 95 point score for Decanter.

Greywacke was created in 2009 by Kevin Judd, chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay from its inception for 25 years and instrumental in the international recognition which Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc enjoys now. 2020 benefitted from an extended growing season of almost perfect conditions, producing intense, ripe fruit, with fine acidity. This is one to stock up on.

Fragrant, ripe Pear William, candied lemon and kumquat make for an alluring bouquet. The palate is effortlessly elegant and delicate, with a gorgeous lemon meringue character. There’s freshness, ripeness and just the right amount of zesty acidity to lend tension and bite. Greywacke continues to set the benchmark high for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. I don’t suppose many bottles will get the chance but if you were to hang onto some for a while, I’d expect them to add weight and complexity over the next 5 years plus.

Seductive bouquet of wild flowers and minerals, a fine leesy complexity and fresh aromas and flavours of citrus, peach tea and sweet hay. Crisp, refreshing, fruity and dry with fine texture. Just enough concentration of flavour to contrast the fresh herb notes and salivating acidity. Well made and long. 2021-2028
95 points Cameron Douglas MS, Decanter

The 2020 Vintage:

Overall 2020 was slightly warmer than average and delivered superb quality across all varieties. The season had a nervous start with some frost in early October, but the rest of spring saw typical conditions. Weather through flowering was settled and fruit set was very good. December saw significant rainfall, but this was followed by the driest period in nearly eighty years. After the extremely dry and sunny summer the weather during the ripening period cooled, extending the growing season and producing near perfect conditions to achieve ripe fruit whilst retaining excellent intensity and acidity. On 24th March New Zealand entered lockdown due to Covid-19. Fortunately the team were able to work as a big family isolation bubble, and despite the uncertain beginnings the harvest functioned efficiently, in the face of very challenging circumstances.
