Wigan Riesling

Peter Lehmann

I've been a huge fan of Peter Lehmann's Wigan Riesling for years. This bone dry Eden Valley Riesling has immense class and character, with a profound capacity to age and yet it is one of the most inexpensive wines we sell. It's no surprise that James Suckling selected the 2015 Wigan as his No. 1 Best Value Wine of 2020. Highly respected Australian wine writer, Nick Stock awards the wine an impressive 98 points.

From the shallow rocky soils of the Eden Valley, the Wigan Riesling has become one of Australia’s most celebrated wines. It has been named IWSC ‘Best Riesling in the World’ six times, and accumulated more than 80 trophies since its inaugural vintage.

The 2015 is due to ship soon and we've just secured our allocation. I recommend stocking up on this one. Enjoy it now for it's freshness and vivacity by all means but if you appreciate the oily character of an aged Riesling, keep some back for a decade or so and you'll be well rewarded.

This has really transformed into a complex, bottle-matured Riesling with lemon-rind, lemon-butter and toasty aromas. The palate is very smoothly arranged, and the wine has taken on a glossy textural quality over the five years in bottle. The length and intensity here is so impressive. This is breathtakingly pure, yet complex and drinkable.

A wine equally split between its freshness on the one hand and honeyed lime juice on the other. It's hard to see how it will increase in complexity, yet it will, as every vintage of Wigan has demonstrated. Now-2035
