Remembering Riley and Looking Forward

As we move into our 7th year at Riley's Way Foundation, we are reminded that Riley's spirit of kindness and friendship is at the heart of everything we do. Riley Hannah Sandler continues to inspire us and our work each and every day. We are filled with hope for what lies ahead as our mission of kindness and empathy is more important than ever. Thank you all for being part of it!

With the help of our community we continue to make a positive and lasting impact in this world. Hear from our Riley's Way interns below about the exciting summer projects they worked on to push our mission forward.
Intern Spotlight: Amber and the Youth Advisory Council
This summer, Amber worked on projects that allowed her "to leave a lasting legacy and stay involved far beyond my high school years. I worked on three projects: creating a Youth Advisory Council, helping to expand the Buddy Reading Program, and developing and evaluating the impact of the Riley’s Way Councils. Through all of these projects, I was able to create and shape the very changes I hoped to see as a student at Riley’s Way and take on a leadership role in doing that." Read more about Amber's projects in her blog here.
Riley’s Way believes in the invaluable perspectives of young people as kind leaders. As such, the new Youth Advisory Council (launching in November!) will comprise students from each of our programs and establish student representation on the Riley’s Way Board. They will advise Riley’s Way on our organizational strategy and programming and bring a valuable youth perspective and voice to our work.
Intern Spotlight: Nya and the Youth Leadership Retreat
During Nya's internship, she helped develop a curriculum surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion work for our virtual Buddy Reading program, an initiative where teens read to Kindergarten students each week. She also attended and wrote about the GirlUp Summit and our GenHERation® Kind Leadership Series (read more in her blog posts linked above). In addition to these projects, Nya has been working alongside the Riley’s Way team to help plan and organize our first virtual Youth Leadership Retreat.
This Fall, our Youth Leadership Retreat will be held virtually, allowing us to make connections and foster a digital community of kind leaders. Our student planning committee is working to make sure this event is interactive, inclusive, and fun! Be sure to check back in our website and social media for the date and more information.
Intern Spotlight: Nicole and the Alumnae Network
"...heading off to college without Riley’s Way was impossible to imagine. I hope to continue the lasting connections and projects I’ve been able to form because of my experiences with Riley’s Way...My internship this summer centered on the creation of our very first Alumnae Network. Our Alumnae Network will not only help connect members of our community, it will also help perpetuate the lasting connections we’ve been able to form. " Click here to read more about Nicole's work.
The new Riley's Way Council Alumnae Network will connect, support, and engage all of the Council members who graduated; they will be able to mentor new students coming up through our programs. Our Alumnae are the next generation of CEOs, non-profit leaders, business leaders, health-care professionals, and policy-makers; and at their core is a foundation of what it means to be a leader: empathy and kindness!
Social Media Highlights
We are partnering with Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation as part of their #BeKind21 campaign. Check out our Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram this September to get ideas for practicing kindness every day with our Kindness Calendar.

Riley's Way continues to support #GOTV and US Census efforts on social media because we believe kindness is being inclusive and engaged in governance at all levels. We will be highlighting different youth leaders across the country using their political power to make a positive difference.
Riley's Way In the News
“We look at each week and we think, what are we doing for the other people that we care about in the world?” Hear more from Riley’s Way Program Director Lauren Shenkman’s interview with Jocelyn Greene from Child’s Play NY.
Check out this article in Broadway World about the support #BeKind21 has from over 165 partners, including Riley's Way! They hope to build on last year's 1.6 million participants from around the world and 41 million acts of kindness.
We send our best wishes to everyone headed back to school and encourage you to find ways to cultivate kindness each and every day!

In Kindness,
The Riley’s Way Team
