Schools Spring Forward with Use of Time Models

PROSE has identified four schools that will work extensively with the Generation Schools Network (GSN) to expand upon current work in scheduling and uses of time.  Satellite Academy High School, ELLIS Preparatory Academy, The Highbridge Green School, and Middle College High School at LaGuardia met on March 16 to begin the collaborative inquiry-based support process.  During this collaborative session, schools began exploring what it takes to support the change process; how they can support innovation; technical issues related to how the State, DOE and the UFT Collective Bargaining Agreement address time; and started developing specific plans about their individual scheduling models.  These four participating schools will also receive differentiated supports through coaching.  GSN will build the capacity of school staff to think differently about time, and assist in the development of school plans.  GSN will also do additional redesign work that takes all of the school's data to create schedules. 
The collaborative sessions are open to all PROSE school and will be announced through the PROSE email and newsletter.   Please feel free to participate.  The resources used in the collaborative sessions are posted on the PROSE wiki for your perusal.

Five, Four, Three, Two, One........Action!

On March 16th, the PROSE Research team held their first Participatory Action Research (PAR) kick-off meeting at the Bronx Collaborative High School. During the session, team members provided an overview of the PAR process and introduced the school staff to various components of a Theory of Change (TOC) by presenting the PROSE TOC designed by the PROSE panel. Following the presentation, Bronx Collaborative High School's principal, Brett Schneider, and chapter leader, Alan Gomez, along with the entire staff of BCHS, 
will work collaboratively to develop a Theory of Change for the student initiative.

The school utilized block scheduling flexibility through PROSE in order to simulate college course offerings and better prepare students for college and careers.  The Research Team will continue to work closely with members of the BCHS staff to support them in generating research questions, collect and analyze data, and ultimately determine the impact of their initiative after completing the first year of implementation.

You can access the recorded TOC webinar by visiting the PROSE wiki knowledge base. Learn more about the process the PROSE team took to create a programmatic theory of change, and how we monitor its application during the implementation cycle.  The TOC file is available for download.  Feel free to use it during your team's TOC creation efforts. Additional TOC resources are also posted on the wiki for your use.

 Policy Update

Answers to many of the Frequently Asked Questions from PROSE schools have been posted on the PROSE Knowledge Base.
 

Teacher Leadership Funding:
Last week, 44 PROSE schools received additional funding to support the development and implementation of teacher leadership within their schools.  32 PROSE schools have also been participating in the Master and Model teacher program offered through the Office of Teacher Recruitment and Quality. As you prepare for budgeting for next year, be aware that funding for these positions is not guaranteed for the 2015-2016 school year.

PROSE Votes:
PROSE principals and chapter leaders will receive communication from the PROSE panel prior to the spring vacation with guidance and instruction on conducting votes from the 2015-2016 school year. This will include how PROSE schools will implement SBO votes.  To prepare for voting, schools should consider which flexibilities in the UFT  contract will be required to successfully implement their school's PROSE plan for the 2015-2016 school year.  These flexibilities may include staggered teacher work schedules, reconfiguring time within teachers' workdays and work week, adjusting Circular 6 assignments and procedures, and making changes to the student or teacher calendars.
40 IDEAS FOR CREATIVE USES OF TIME:
With the buzz around Use of Time, school calendars and scheduling innovations, the PROSE team encourages principals and teachers to share creative ideas that maximize time for student and/or professional growth. If  you have an exciting concept that other schools can learn from and/or implement, please share by completing the 40 Ideas for Creative Uses of Time form within the PROSE PLC.
PROSE SCHOOL INTER-VISITATIONS:
Would you like to further your PROSE school support by hosting a school site visit or visiting a fellow PROSE school? The PROSE team is offering to broker these relationships and visits by providing per diem funding. Hosting and visiting schools will share resources and video reflections of the visit within the PROSE Inter-visitation Group in the PROSE PLC. Please complete the PROSE School Inter-visitation Form to get started.
 SAVE THE DATE: May 4 - PROSE End-of-Year Reflection: PROSE invites Lee Teitel to take PROSE schools through an interactive journey of innovation through adaptive leadership. During the course of the day, current and new schools will have an opportunity to reflect on implementations as a collective PROSE community in the areas of: Option PROSE, Mastery-Based Course Extension, Use of Time, Participatory Action Research, and Teacher Leadership. On February 6, almost 100 PROSE principals and teachers attended the PROSE Mid-Year Symposium that consisted of a morning session providing guidance on how to construct a Theory of Change, and monitor the progress of their innovation, as well as an afternoon panel session in which current provided updates on their implementation processes.  Over 80% of respondents found the various sessions useful and many participants expressed a desire to receive further support in measuring and monitoring their progress.
 
Meet the PROSE Team: John Martin

John Martin supports the PROSE team in research and data analysis.  Prior to joining the PROSE team, John was a Director on the Academic and Talent Management team in the Office of School Support.  He was responsible for overseeing the Network Performance Management process and managing the new promotion policy implementation.  John also has extensive experience in designing and implementing competency-based accountability systems.
