The PROSE Application is Open. Come and Get It!!!

The PROSE Panel is excited to announce that the 2016 PROSE application opens this month.  If you are in a school that is highly collaborative, has a strong distributed leadership model, and is innovative in its practices, you may be a great fit for PROSE.  PROSE encourages schools that have teacher-led innovations transpiring in their buildings to build upon those innovations by proposing bold, out-of-the box ideas that transcend union or Chancellor's regulations. 

Participation in PROSE offers the following to schools: 
  • the ability to make changes to school structures outside of existing regulations, including use of time and the role of administration, teachers, and students in teaching and learning;
  • the ability to ensure that school innovations happen with the input and leadership of teachers and other school staff in collaboration with their administrators;
  • participation in a community of forward-thinking, collaborative and innovative schools, teachers, and school leaders;
  • the ability to institutionalize key innovative practices;
  • opportunities to share experiences in order to inform district policy.
Schools may apply to PROSE by submitting applications to the PROSE Panel by COB February 29, 2016 via the online platform, which will open on January 25, 2016.

 Urban Assembly Maker's Recipe for Innovation

As a PROSE school, Urban Assembly Maker (UA Maker) has extended their school day to provide teachers additional common planning and parent engagement time. They also implement Option PROSE for teacher evaluations. As a mastery based grading school they are continuing to work with the PROSE team to find innovative educational practices that personalize the student experience and lead to college and career ready students.

UA Maker opened in 2014, part of the Urban Assembly network of small, unscreened public NYC schools. It was founded in partnership with Intersection (formerly Control Group) and Parsons.  A $1.5M Opportunity by Design Grant from the Carnegie Corporation of NY launched the school’s design phase. Industry advisors work closely with the school to influence curricular and real-world learning opportunities that reinforce the use of design-thinking as the skill to best prepare students for pos-tsecondary success. In 2015 the school was awarded status as a “living lab” site location for NYC’s Mastery Collaborative to share best its practices.
 
At UA Maker, the staff believes the world needs problem solvers who can find and solve challenges to create positive change in a world where change is the only constant.  Collectively, they empower students to be successful, adaptive citizens of the future, who will create the future through design-thinking and innovation.  Their students are curious about the world around them and empathize with others to develop personalized solutions. Students know that to innovate, they must take risks. They measure the impact of their actions and overcome challenges with resilience.
In addition, students are preparing to enter the post-secondary option of their choice. They will be ready to enter college, or the work force with a working knowledge of technology, a clear sense of their strengths and weaknesses, and growth and design-thinking mindsets, which will ensure they are resilient in pursuit of success.

UA Maker's goal is to develop a replicable school model that prepares students to become design-thinkers: students who are able to critically think and assess their process for problem solving.  They have developed a rubric to evaluate the five phases of design thinking - discovery, definition, design, development, and delivery.

As part of their design-thinking process, at the beginning of each project-based learning unit, students record what they know and need to know about the task, and plan possible next steps. Throughout the project, teachers plan and deliver lessons and workshops to address students’ “need to knowsand students monitor their progress toward accomplishing the task. Students self-assess and re-evaluate both their approach to a problem, and their efficacy in solving that problem using design-thinking.  

As students progress through their coursework, they have access to a personalized technology dashboard that shows their progress towards standards mastered, by class.
January 30 & 31st - PROSE Retreat: The UFT has invited PROSE schools THAT EXPRESSED AN INTEREST IN DISTRIBUTED LEADERSHIP to participate in a two-day Collaborative and Distributed Leadership Retreat.  The purpose of this retreat is to allow schools to examine their own collaborative practices, hear from other schools, share ideas, and bring their experience back to their own school community.  IF YOU DID NOT RECEIVE AN INVITATION, BUT BELIEVE YOUR SCHOOL WOULD BENEFIT BY ATTENDING THE RETREAT, THE UFT WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU JOIN US.  SPACE IS LIMITED, HOWEVER, SO  PLEASE CONTACT THE UFT  IMMEDIATELY TO CHECK ABOUT AVAILABILITY AND TO REGISTER.

Please note that current PROSE schools do not have to reapply.

Holding Additional PROSE Votes:
In light of the 2016-2017 PROSE application roll-out this month, this is a reminder that your school may petition the PROSE Panel to conduct votes to implement additional flexibilities. If your community is interested at any time in working with the PROSE Panel to conduct additional PROSE votes, please send a joint email from the principal and chapter leader to the PROSE Panel describing your request and the Panel will discuss and reply to you with next steps.
 
PROSE schools who are interested in but have not yet held a vote to implement additional flexibility for the 2015-2016 school year should use this guide to draft the ballot and submit to the PROSE Panel as soon as possible.
In the Fall of 2015-16, the PROSE Panel began hosting Critical Friends sessions where PROSE schools share best practices with one another around the implementation of their innovations. These sessions are gaining positive momentum as attendance has increased over the course of the school year thus far.
Meet the PROSE Team: Chandice Carroll

Chandice Carroll is a member of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) and a delegate to the New York State United Teachers.  For the last 17 years she has served the South Bronx Community as an early childhood educator.  Chandice served in various capacities at the UFT including; School Chapter Leader, PM Staffer for certification, a member of both the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, and The American Federation of Teachers Latino Caucus. Currently Chandice is a School Outreach Liaison for the Office of School-wide Initiatives.
