When I tell people what I do for a living—help folks who don't enjoy what they do for work figure out what they really want to do 'when they grow up'—I often hear something like: "(sigh) Yeah, I don't really know what I want to do, but at this point, I just can't change."

What you can learn from Pope Francis about leadership

Here in the U.S., the news last week was dominated by the visit from Pope Francis, which sparked much discussion about service and humility, and also about polarizing political subjects like climate change, immigration, and abortion. I have not, on the other hand, heard very much discussion about Pope Francis and his style as a leader.

This Fast Company article identifies five lessons we can learn from the Pope about leadership, including remaining accessible and being willing to take risks. Not an easy thing, to lead an organization as established and widespread as the Catholic Church! See what you think.  Read the article

What's wrong with NOT wanting to be CEO?

A new research paper from Harvard Business School titled Compared to men, women view professional advancement as equally attainable, but less desirable is raising some eyebrows. Some wonder if the study is suggesting that fewer opportunities should be offered to women in the workplace. The researchers—all women, by the way—say "no."

A suggestions in the Forbes article that reported on this research indicates that women have more life goals than men, but fewer of those goals are focused on 'power'. It reminds me how, when it comes to feeling fulfilled with work, it's important to be clear on your personal goals and what's motivating them—regardless of gender.  Read the article
