Love Rosendal Festival 2017

WHERE: Rosendal

WHEN: 11-12 February 2017

HOW: Call +27 (0)58 211-0902

To extend the fuzzy feeling of Valentine’s Day, the little village of Rosendal comes alive with the Love Rosendal Festival. This year, it will take place from 12 to 14 February.

Rosendal, situated in the eastern part of the South African province of the Free State, has earned acclaim for the hospitality that it shows to the many visitors that attend this celebration of love, romance and a smattering of all things sexy. Of course, the prettiness of the surroundings only makes this festival even more special.

The Love Rosendal Festival showcases the idyllic surrounds, as well as the creativity and innovation of the people. Of course, a festival would not be fun without awesome food to boot, and this event is no exception. The many stalls will be complemented by live performances, mini workshops, sports events, entertainment and a Valentine’s parade that stretches between the common and the Waya Waya Tavern. This will include costumed horse riders, puppets, jugglers and plenty more. Gumboot dancing, drum majorettes from the Mautse Secondary School and a trash band performance will keep the feet stomping and the fun flowing.

Shopaholics will love browsing the many stalls and outlets, collecting keepsakes and gifts. Comedy shows and musical performances will keep young and old alike occupied (although some have adult content and are not suitable for little ones). There is also plenty to see and do for children, including a workshop on costume making. Round off the days with a bonfire on the common or a traditional township braai at the shebeen.

Why Clarens is the perfect weekend escape

Lovely article about Clarens, found on the Getaway website under Blog Categories, by Melanie Van Zyl.....

"Clarens has it all: a cosy village atmosphere, great farm stays and statuesque mountains – and that’s where you should head, says Melanie Van Zyl.

In the south-eastern corner of the Free State, this famously flat province has a change in disposition and generously shares the sky with columns of the earth as broad as they are tall (kind of like the stereotypical farmers you’d expect of the OFM region too, come to think of it). Huddled up in the valley between these giant heights of ochre-orange sandstone, a little village called Clarens regularly charms city slickers with unique eateries, retail therapy and locally brewed beer.

Named after the Clarens of Switzerland, where Paul Kruger spent his last days in exile, South Africa’s Clarens has become quite the weekend destination. It’s a common outing for Joburgers and, according to village locals, Durbanites are also taking advantage of its close proximity ‒ it’s just over three hours away from both city centres. Known (and verified by the high number of galleries) as an artists’ haven, the real charm of Clarens is that there are no franchises or big outlets. The closest Wimpy, Woolies and 1-Stop are 40 kilometres away in Bethlehem ‒ just the way it should be. Every establishment is owner-run. No restaurant is replicated elsewhere in the country; the stores are small, unique boutique outlets and, except for the Protea Hotel, so are the accommodation options."

Weird Things You Never Knew About Valentines Day:
  • 15% of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day.
  • More at-home pregnancy tests are sold in March than in any other month.
  • The oldest surviving valentine dates from 1415. It is a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife. At the time, the duke was being held in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt.
  • Hallmark produced its first valentine in 1913.
  • Teachers receive the most valentines, followed by kids, mothers, wives and sweethearts.

The Vintage Tractor Fair

In Clocolan, Free State

WHERE: Clocolan

WHEN: 25 February to 27 March 2017

HOW: Call +27 (0)51 943-0021

Every year since 1989 a Vintage Tractor and Engine Fair has been held in the village of Clocolan, in the scenic Eastern Free State Highlands. Tractors are sent from as far afield as Natal and the Fair has grown from just 29 tractors in 1989 to 153 in recent years. Thursday opens the events with judging of all classes and best of show.

A parade through the streets of the village on the Friday creates a carnival like atmosphere, whilst such wondrous events as the firing up of the 1902 threshing machine in readiness for a working demonstration makes for an unforgettable experience.

The National Ploughing Championships are held each year at Clocolan during this Fair, and are a must see, with these wonderful machines of a by-gone era puffing and panting to the finish line amidst much laughter, excitement and cheering.

Don’t miss the hand plowing with a team of magnificent Nguni bulls. These spectacular beasts are well worth the visit all on their own!!! There are stalls, horse riding, gymkhana, bars and pubs, and on Saturday night… party time in the Showground Hall with live music and much carousing.

Have you seen a bunch of veteran tractors playing musical chairs, attended a genuine Free State “op-skop”, the sites and sounds of a real Free State “dorpie”? Then don’t miss the Vintage Tractor Fair in Clocolan ... tlo bona (come see).

Afriski Mountain Resort in the northern Lesotho highlands in conjunction with Rocky Mountain, will be holding their third Rocky Mountain Festival in March 2017.
