Pastor's Report
The Garden Church continues to grow! We have been focusing on building  our core team and putting down the necessary roots and infrastructure to plant a healthy church. It is such a joy to meet and be getting to know the amazing collection of people that God is gathering together in our core team.  Each person comes with beautiful stories and gifts to share with the budding community.  I looked around my living room at our last Core Team meeting and expressed my gratitude and amazement at the team that has come together over the past two months.  Each person is there for a reason and together we are being church and poised to build something beautiful.

We’ve met for our second Gathering to work together, worship together, and eat together.  We’re having our Gatherings monthly for the first four months as we build our core and discover who we are together as church. We’ll then move to every other week and then weekly as we go public in the New Year.  A highlight of our October Gathering was having Adri, the fantastic student of our board member Dr. Emma Ogley-Oliver who is doing a project with us as an intern this fall, lead us in a community mapping project to discover our community. We love having Adri’s leadership and heart as part of our forming community.

The Find-the-Land Taskforce continues to meet and is narrowing down on lots that we can potentially use or lease at a low rate. There are a number of viable options on the list, both for a semi-permanent short-term space, and possibilities for a more long-term home.

The Board and I continue to work to put in place the many necessary details for a start-up organization, from bookkeeping to bylaws, data-management to fundraising. Our major crowd-funding effort will be launched later this week and we hope you will participate and spread the vision.

With gratitude for all that is unfolding,
Rev. Anna Woofenden

How to support the Garden Church

We are currently working to secure pledges, grants, and donations to fund the first three years of the Garden Church startup. In the startup season, we are inviting individuals and groups to join our Cultivation Team and contribute to this work and be the fertilizer and nutrients to provide fertile ground for this church to grow from.
The physical ground of the Garden Church may be rooted in one particular community, but the opportunity to be part of cultivating this community stretches out across the miles. We’re inviting anyone who feels led and believes in the work of re-imagining church and creating community around the earth and feeding people to be part of our community.

Garden Church Gathering

On Sunday (October 26th, 2014), the Garden Church members and supporters gathered together to participate in one of the many important steps in building our communal garden and church in San Pedro. We first met in front of the docks overlooking beautiful scenery and talked about what community mapping was, then set out to map various streets from Harbor Blvd. to Pacific Ave. After being divided into pairs and being out and about for about 30 minutes, we slowly started coming together again at our beautiful meeting space where blankets and chairs had already been set up to greet us. After a time of worship led by Rev. Anna with the musical help of Cory, we ate a delicious meal of gluten free wraps made by Lorie and other snacks provided by others. We then participated in a debriefing exercise where we got to share our thoughts about the mapping activity and reflect on what we saw and experienced. The entire group left the gathering that Sunday with bright smiles, new knowledge, and an energy of excitement for what is to come in the future of creating the vision of the Garden Church. –Adri, Garden Church Intern
Garden Church Intern
Hello! My name is Adrianna Spallino (but you can call me Adri). I am currently a senior at Marymount California University in Rancho Palos Verdes/San Pedro. I will be graduating with my Psychology degree in Spring of 2015. My major and interest in community psychology specifically is what interested me in interning for the Garden Church to be a part of this new and exciting project. For the past 3 years of my college experience, I have been actively involved in the Health and Wellness organization of MCU. I came to Marymount with a passion for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. I started out as a member of Ductus Exemplo (lead by example in Latin), and have now been president of the organization for the past 2 semesters. Throughout my experience in Ductus Exemplo, I have been to numerous leadership conferences, held a national leadership position with the BACCHUS network (the national wellness program), and been through 3 trainings to become a Certified Peer Educator. With all of this said, the mission of the Garden Church is really what caught my eye and what motivated me to do the work to help the Garden Church reach this goal of improving the well-being of the San Pedro community both physically and spiritually.
