"Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
~1 Thessalonians 5:18
How often do we thank God for the good things (however large or small) that happen in our lives? How often do we thank God for all the bad things that happen in our lives?
Chances are we give thanks to God for more good situations than bad. I know I am guilty of this very thing. But as I learned in my recent seminary class titled "Pain, Suffering, and Healing," thanks should be given to God no matter the circumstances in our lives -- good or bad.
As 1 Thessalonians says, we are to give thanks in ALL circumstances, not just good circumstances, or some circumstances, but ALL. God has a plan; everything that happens in our lives is willed by God. He allows everything that is happening to happen for a reason, whether that reason is to mature our faith, teach us a lesson, or something beyond our human understanding. Nonetheless, God is in control and deserves praise in ALL circumstances.
So as we carry on with the holiday season (and in all seasons), let us remember to give thanks to God when we are with family, as we enjoy a thanksgiving feast (or perhaps several feasts), or even when all our plans don't work out as we imagined. Let all the glory be given to God. Happy Thanksgiving!
