May 2015
A message from BAC's new
Chief Executive, Paul Fear

I am delighted to be joining the BAC team and thank Sheila Needham, BAC's Chief Inspector, for doing such an outstanding job as Interim CEO.
The challenges facing the independent education sector are many but opportunities are increasing.
Education is the UK's fifth biggest export by value and supports tens of thousands of jobs within the UK.  BAC will continue to be an active partner in the ongoing success of the sector within Britain and overseas.

I look forward to working with you all over the coming months.

BAC achieves full membership of ENQA

The BAC is happy to announce that it is now a full member of The European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) – an umbrella organisation which represents quality assurance organisations from the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) member states. ENQA promotes European co-operation in the field of quality assurance in higher education, and disseminates information and expertise among its members and towards stakeholders in order to develop and share good practice and to foster the European dimension of quality assurance.

As an ENQA member organisation, the BAC has demonstrated that it meets the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG). Through achieving accredited status, BAC providers have established that their organisation adheres to governance criteria that are underpinned by internationally recognised standards.

If you would like to find out more about ENQA and the work it does, please visit the
ENQA website.

SVV re-named to STSV
Since 24 April 2015, it has not been possible to apply for entry clearance or leave to remain as a ‘student visitor’. Routes for various types of ‘short-term student’ have been introduced instead.

The old ‘Student Visitor Visa’ (SVV) has been replaced by the Short Term Study Visa (STSV).  This is a change in name only – the eligibility requirements remain the same.

Biometric Residence Permits

A Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) is a document issued by the Home Office to students (and their partners and children) as evidence of their immigration permission (also known as leave to enter or remain). They are the shape and size of a credit card and show your photograph on the front, together with information about how long your permission is valid for. They also show whether you are allowed to do any work, tell you if you are required to register with the police, and if it was issued on or after 18 March 2015 your national insurance number (if you have one) as well as your eligibility for free NHS hospital treatment.

Getting Education Certificates ‘legalised’
Any UK public document can be ‘legalised’ by asking the UK government to confirm that a UK public official’s signature, seal or stamp on the document is genuine. This might be needed to if a local authority abroad has asked for the provision of a document and they’ve said it must be’ legalised’. The BAC is recognised by the UK Government for this purpose i.e. if you possess an education certificate from a BAC accredited provider, the UK government will consider confirmation of its authenticity.
