As part of our Gallery Learning Programme for the Royal Photographic Society we are screening Finding Vivian Maier.

Join us for this film that documents the incredible artistry of nanny and closet street photographer Vivian Maier. Her work came to light and went viral in 2007 when John Maloof discovered 100,000 of her negatives in Chicago.

“How can I ever describe the exuberant richness and multiplicity of culture in this place to you? This is both my task and my delight.”  The Gentle Author.
In 2009, The Gentle Author pledged to write 10,000 stories about the area of East London where he lives, on his blog, Spitalfields Life.   The Gentle Author’s London Album, a gift from the novelist, Sarah Winman, inspired this year’s Pale Project, run by the dlr writer-in-residence, Selina Guinness.
Now Selina has invited these two Londoners, Sarah Winman and The Gentle Author, to reflect on the ethics of writing about real communities in a changing world.  We will be discussing what writers owe to their literary territories, and how blogs can foster shared citizenship among readers. What might similar initiatives gain for place-making in Dublin and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown?

Sarah Winman is an actress and best-selling novelist, now living in London. Her debut, When God was a Rabbit, was critically acclaimed as 'sharply funny', 'recognizably true and heart-breaking'. Now, her second novel, A Year of Marvellous Ways, recounts the tale of an unlikely friendship between an old woman coming to the end of her life, and a young soldier who sees little point going on with his.  Atmospherically set on a Cornwall creek in the aftermath of the Second World War, this 'gripping waiting game' has been described as 'utterly engrossing' & is a Richard and Judy Bookclub choice.
Sarah Winman is a compelling reader of her work. Join Sarah and Selina Guinness for an entertaining evening of Marvellous Ways and talk of love, loss and cold-water swimming.
