Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and dlr Arts Office are delighted to present Uncovering a Collection
Opening 13th August -23rd September
This exhibition includes a selection of works that span over a century in time.
The works selected highlight some key moments in the Collection’s history-from a generous donation of paintings made to the then Dún Laoghaire Corporation by the Friends of the National Collection in the mid 20th Century and include works as notable as Mainie Jellett, Mary Swanzy and Pierre Bonnard to recent works that were created during artists’ residency programmes by Julie Merriman and Noel Bowler.
Over time the Collection has grown to include local artists, those involved in its arts programme and a contemporary collection of works purchased from younger artists, recent graduates and degree shows. This is the first time that these works from the County Collection have been exhibited together. Many of the artists represented in this exhibition have obvious connections either by living in or having a relationship with the County. Others show an involvement with the County that offer a more poignant insight.

Panel Talk - Collecting and Keeping Artworks
Date:23rd September
Time:6.30-8pm
Venue:Studio, dlr LexIcon (level 1 beside café)
Admission:Free
One of the main themes that we were interested in exploring when we began to look at the exhibition programme for Uncovering a Collection was the notion of collecting, from the domestic to the national institution. How does one start their own art collection? Why do we need to collect ? How do large institutions, such as local authorities or national art organisations, develop their collections over time? And once I have some artworks how can I make sure to look after them at home?
This evening event will help to demystify some of these questions. We have invited a panel of experts to offer their perspectives, with time for Q&A at the end.
Panel includes: Christina Kennedy, Senior Curator; Head of Collections, IMMA
Professor Ciarán Benson, Emeritus Professor of Psychology, Kevin Kavanagh, Director Kevin Kavanagh Gallery, Donall Curtin, Private Collector and Muirne Lydon, Painting Conservator, National Gallery of Ireland.
Places are limited so please book through www.eventbrite.ie and search for Uncovering a Collection.
