Hello Neighbor.
Melons make the waning days of
summer in Seattle that much sweeter.

What's New at Ballard, Wallingford, & Madrona?

King's Mozzerella is new to SFMA markets and bringing terrific fresh cheese in many variations.
It's Saison season at Tin Dog Brewing! Find this 4-pack at Wallingford and Madrona.
With so much fresh produce in abundance, it's time to start canning, preserving, pickling, and processing. These jams from Tiny's Organic preserve the tastes of summer stone fruit.
Grapes are fresh at Managa Farms. Find them at the Ballard Farmers Market on Sunday. Brighten up your breakfast plate or lunch box with a few or a lot!
Sunset Hills Ceramics
Ballard, WA

Being a first time vendor is an exciting experience, with a fair amount of troubleshooting. We visited with Elizabeth Alexander from Sunset Hills Ceramics to learn more about what she has enjoyed throughout the process. In the park on Wednesdays, Elizabeth is putting the finishing touches on her table as the market opens in Wallingford. Tablecloths are layered to highlight her three different lines of wares, pops of color shine back at the sun beams that touch them, and Elizabeth completes the scene with a welcoming smile.
"We really didn't realize how much goes into set up! The tent, the sandbags, all the boxes, it's a lot more work than we thought, but it's been great", she recounts the trials of getting the set-up streamlined, with such a positive attitude. Every piece of the puzzle has been a worthwhile learning experience. The feeling of community that the Wallingford Farmers Market creates is incomparable. Elizabeth elaborates, "I'm getting so many ideas from people here. Mixing bowls, pie plates, garlic dishes. Everyone has something they want to see at the market or learn how to make at the studio."
The most important part of being at the market for Elizabeth is bringing beauty to people's dinner table. "We hope our products enhance the experience of being together and eating together - as family, as friends, as community, just together." Find the ingredients that inspire you to share a meal with someone special, and the perfect vessel to serve them in, at the next Wallingford Farmers Market, and in Elizabeth's tent.

Make the most of summer veggies
with this dish from our recent chef demo.

3 Cups Olive Oil
2 lb Eggplant, Cut into 1" Cubes
1 Yellow Onion
6 Cloves Garlic, Sliced
1/2 Head Celery
3 T. Tomato Paste
2 lb. Mixed Summer Squash, Diced
2 Cups Crushed Tomatoes
1 lb. Fresh Tomatoes, or Cherry Tomatoes
4 Red Bell Peppers, Diced
1/2 Cup Red Wine Vinegar
1/2 Cup Gold Raisins
1/2 Cup Honey
4 T Sunflower Seeds
Basil Chiffonade

In a large pot with some of the olive oil, sweat sweet onion, celery, and garlic until translucent. Add crushed tomato, and reduce heat to a lazy bubble. In a separate large saute pan, heat sufficient oil in a large saute pan. Working in batches, fry all of the eggplant to caramelize. As the eggplant is complete, add tomato sauce. Repeat the procedure with squash and peppers. Toast sunflower seeds and add sauce. Add the raisins and cut fresh tomato to the sauce. Finally, caramelized the honey in the saute pan until dark brown and fragrant. Deglaze the pan with vinegar and add to the pot. Finish the caponata with basil chiffonade.
