Farmer Matt of Foothills Farm
"I'm really looking forward to just meeting folks on the west side of Seattle." Matt Steinman of Foothills Farm is new to the Wallingford Farmers Market this season and he is jazzed about all things brassicas, pasture raised chickens, and finding out what markets in Seattle have to offer. We caught up with Matt at the market on Wednesday to find out more about Foothills Farm of Sedro-Woolley.
In 1948, Matt's grandparents bought the farm, and his grandmother named it. For most of his life, he has lived on the farm; although he just started farming commercially about 6 years ago. His family is growing there together, planting heirloom beans and tending the hens.
"We are trying to be as symbiotic as possible. The chickens provide the best fertilizer, create healthy soil, and maintain a healthy ecosystem on the farm', Matt describes his poultry philosophy with loving detail. The proof is in the eggs, AND the cabbage - happy chickens make a happy farm.
The Tilth Alliance will be visiting Foothills farm for a tour in July. Find farmer Matt at the Wallingford Farmers Market every Wednesday for more details on this event!
