November 2015

Greetings MMAMTA Members! Hope this message finds you well. It's hard to believe that it's already November. This semester is flying by! I'd like to thank all the teachers who participated or had students participate in Piano Day @ MU. The event was successful and it was so wonderful to work with such a talented group of young musicians!

Good luck to everyone participating at MMTA and MTNA this coming weekend!

MMTA State Competition Guest Artist Recital

Don’t Miss This Exciting Piano Recital by
American Pianist, Christopher Taylor
Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 7:30pm

Shuck Music Recital Hall, River Campus, SEMO
Free and open to the public

Recipient of numerous prizes including the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the William Kapell International Competition, the Gilmore Young Artist Award and the American Pianists Association Fellowship, pianist Christopher Taylor catapulted to stardom when he won the Bronze Medal at the 1993 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.  He continues to thrill audiences with wide-ranging projects including performances of the Bach Goldberg Variations on a double manual piano he himself invented, as well as performances of monumental cycles such as the complete 32 Beethoven Sonatas, the Liszt Transcendental Etudes and Messiaen Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant Jésus.

Don’t miss this chance to hear Mr. Taylor in a program that includes the Liszt transcription of Beethoven’s “Pastorale” Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Op. 68, the epic Brahms Sonata in F Minor Op. 5, and two works by English composer Cecilia McDowall.

Thank you to those of you who for participated in my student Joy Martin's pedagogical project this semester!

Many of you took the time to respond to her questionnaire about the value of teaching duets to your students. She will be presenting her project and performing pedagogical duets, a duo, and a trio, on Saturday, November 14th at 7pm in Whitmore Recital Hall and would like to invite you to attend if you are able.

Planning ahead: January 2016 Teachers' Recital

A message from Ruth Robertson:

It's not too early to start thinking about our Teachers' Recital early next year (January 24, 2016).  Snoop through your repertoire to dust off some "golden oldie" or to find a new piece, consider performing either as a soloist or in collaboration with a colleague.

It's great for our students to see us performing for a change and it's fun to cook up some catchy duo or trio.

We like to keep each selection under 7' to provide opportunity for many to perform.  No need to commit right away, but if you have questions, please contact the recital coordinator at  Thanks.

Do you have an event or an announcement that you want to share with the group?

E-mail me a week before the end of the month and I will include it in the next newsletter!
