Save Ontario Shorelines April Update

Spring Raptor Count:

April is high season for migrating raptors as well as the return of our local raptors. If you enjoy watching these amazing birds, consider joining other SOS members in counting raptors in the Lighthouse Wind project area. This “citizen raptor count” can gather important information about the impact that 600+ foot industrial wind towers will have on migrating raptors. Email Kate Kremer at for further information if you are interested.

Summer Volunteers Needed – Contact SOS Now!

Save Ontario Shores is planning to be present at as many local events as possible this summer. To help us determine what we can commit to do, we would ask all supporters to consider helping for some hours. We would pair new volunteers with those who have done the summer events before.

If this is something you are willing to do, please email us or send us a Facebook message. In particular let us know if you can assist us during the last week of July and/or first week of August. This will help us to better plan for what we can reasonably commit to do. Send SOS a message at if you can put your name on a list of volunteers. Or send us a message through our Facebook page:

Please Keep DPS Comments Coming

As you gather with friends and family this spring, please consider asking them to write a letter to the DPS website regarding the Lighthouse Wind project. In the upper right-hand corner there is a link to “Post Comments” where you can write. We are trying to let the Department of Public Service know that we are still engaged and we are still opposed.

If you need an idea about making a comment consider reading and supporting the recent letter from our Town Supervisors titled “Four Town Supervisors Say Governor’s Push to Protect Long Island View Shed Should Also Include Rural NY”. It can be found in the Hub and other papers. Other concerns to raise in letters can be found on our website.

Movie “Windfall” to Watch or Re-Watch

SOS members gathered in Barker this week for an update on the Lighthouse Wind project and to watch the 2010 movie “Windfall”. If you have not watched this movie or have not viewed it in a year or so we encourage you to check it out. Below is a link to a review. If you have a small group of family or friends that you would like to show it to please contact via email or Facebook message. SOS has copies that you can borrow!

Review of “Windfall”

Several things to remember in watching the movie:

  • The Windfall Movie took place prior to Article 10.

  • The industrial wind turbines proposed in the movie were about 400 feet tall. Apex has proposed turbines that are 620 feet tall or the tallest available at the time of application which could make them much taller.
