Reaching Latino Communities
9 Ways Goes On the Road

CREA Results joined over 140 Colorado partners in disseminating the Spanish-language 9 Ways to Grow Healthy Colorado Kids messaging resources in communities around Colorado. CREA Results, that is , Community + Research + Education + Awareness = Results,  is a grassroots organization  that harnesses the talents and abilities of community members in eliminating health disparities and environmental poverty through local action*.  Fernando Pineda-Reyes, CREA Results CEO, is an expert in engaging Latino communities around Colorado alongside a team of Promotores de Salud or Community Health Workers.

CREA Results, in collaboration with the Trailhead Institute and the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission, is the beneficiary of a mobile health and wellness clinic. CREA Results intends to park the mobile clinic in 25-50 communities this year and offer diverse services, including healthy beverage messaging, the 9 Ways messaging, and leading parents through physical play activities with children.

Beverage Messaging in the Media

Throughout June, Entravision Communications played the 9 Ways Spanish water message “Tiene sed, Tome agua” on billboards, radio and television. The messaging spots broadcasted the message and supporting information through 15 second mobile and desktop ad spots; 15 and 30 second radio spots; and 5 and 15 second TV spots reaching a minimum of 40,000 impressions of the message to Spanish speakers in Colorado on numerous sites (e.g., Univision, Unimas, Jose, La Tricolor, Super Estrella) used most by Hispanics. Visit the One Stop ECOP Shop online toolkit to access spots and share on your social media sites.

AAP: Infants and fruit juice

In May, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) updated their current recommendations regarding offering fruit juice to infants, children and adolescents. Because fruit juice is high in sugar, frequent consumption could result in cavities and excess weight gain. The AAP states, "it is optimal to completely avoid the use of juice in infants before 1 year of age." The full recommendations can be found here

Farmer's Market Season

Farmer's Markets offer the opportunity to not only meet your local farmer and find amazing farm fresh produce but to make a conscious decision to support local agriculture. Kids eat free all summer long!
During the school year, 21 million children receive free and reduced-priced meals through the School Breakfast and National School Lunch Programs. But when school is out, many low-income children relying on these school meals go hungry. To fill this gap, the USDA provides federally funded meals through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). This program provides free, nutritious meals to children at approved sites in areas with high concentrations of low-income children. To find summer sites near you, visit or text FOOD to 877-877. For more information about the program contact Ashley Moen: or visit
Hidden Sugar Campaign

The Healthy Beverage Partnership (see April issue) is an initiative working to reduce sugary drink consumption and promote healthy food in community venues. Dr. Chris Urbina, campaign spokesperson, was interviewed in Spanish about sugary drinks and healthier alternatives during a recent segment of the Despierta Colorado TV program. Check out the clip of the TV segment!
Free entry to recreational & educational attractions

Federal lands promote physical activity by providing opportunities for recreational activities such as hiking, water sports, biking and other types of outdoor exploration. Five federal land management agencies have designated several fee-free days for 2017. While exploring the great outdoors, check out Generation Wild's list of 100 Things To Do Before You're 12 because Kids Grow Better Outside! The Scientific & Cultural Facilities District has created an interactive calendar of fee-free days for Denver metro attractions with events all year long.
