3 Questions For You

March 19, 2015

Hello Again, Happy Campers!

Ahhhhh...we're not sure about where you are, but here in the Northeast we are getting our first taste of above freezing temps in quite some time and it is grand. We even hit the 50's this past week and I have some serious spring fever. I have been looking at a lot of info about paddling in the Adirondacks!

I will start off by announcing the mailing list member who is the lucky recipient of the February Black Diamond Mega Light Tarp Shelter giveaway. Nick Belcaster! He tweeted, pinned, liked, shared and posted a winter fun photo to our Facebook and our Twitter pages. All of that support paid off...he was entered TWELVE times and his name was drawn! Already quite an EPIC adventurer, we can't wait to see photos from your adventures with that awesome shelter! WHOOP! :)

Another Announcement: Welcome to our new format!

The blog has been a bit quiet this month due to general busy-ness and a wonderful late-winter cold making the rounds. But we are back and cranking out great stuff for you!

Our newsletter is changing, and we think you will like it! Being the busy, over-employed, family-first, nature-loving types that we are, we came to the realization that keeping our blog fresh AND delivering more content via the newsletter was way too much to do...if we actually want to spend any time together in the outdoors.

So, going forward, this newsletter will serve as a digest to recap our blog posts and most popular social media activity since we last published, and we will publish weekly instead of monthly.

What does this mean for you? Well, if you are as busy as we are, this is great news. It means you get to keep up with everything going on at It's More Fun Outdoors, with one email! Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, StumbleUpon, and right on our website....all in one place so you can get to the content that interests you most...FAST...and you won't miss anything.

What has not changed: You are still entered one time in every giveaway we do, just for being a list member. Because we really, REALLY appreciate your support through the wild west stages of building our blog. Thank you!

So...Without Further Adieu...

Here's what we have been up to for the past month!

Feature Article:

3 Fun Outdoor Activities To Keep The Whole Family Engaged For Hours and Have Them Begging To Go Again!

Wherever you spend time outdoors, there is plenty for the kids to do without taking along their favorite electronic devices!

These three activities are tried and true favorites for Dora, and your kiddos will love them too. I'm not going to lie, I love doing them as much as she does! :)

You probably already have everything you need to try all of these activities out today! Details on the blog!

A Winter Climb Of Cascade and Porter Mountains in the Adirondacks

One from the archives...but with conditions so similar this year, one to consider! A beautiful, snowy day below treeline and EPIC adrenaline rush up on top! Video from Porter's crazy summit included in the post. Read it here!

An Olympic Style Family Valentine's Weekend In Lake Placid, NY

Have you ever wondered what it's like to race down the Olympic Bobsled run? Stand at the top of the Olympic ski jumps? Well, come to Lake Placid and find out! We did, and it was an unforgettable weekend! If you love the Winter Olympics, or even if you are just an adrenaline junkie, the Olympic Passport is a must. Post includes video of the Bobsled run.

We crammed so much into our 3-day stay, that we had to split this post up into two parts. Read Part 1...with all of the Olympic fun, right here!

Quick Winter Camp For a Sunrise Summit

Adventures don't have to be time-intensive epics! Last weekend, we booked a last-minute stay in a lean to at ADK's Heart Lake property, got there in time to cook dinner, crash, and get up at 4:30am to climb a mountain and enjoy our morning coffee on the summit at sunrise! I was once again amazed at how less than 24 hours in the outdoors felt like a week away from the daily grind! DO THIS! Read all about the trip, here.

Gear Review:

MSR Pocket Rocket Backpacking Stove

With warmer weather on the way, we have the opportunity to travel even lighter with so much of our gear. I am excited about this!

As long as temps stay above the mid-twenties (Fahrenheit), we can leave the added bulk and weight of our MSR Whisperlite stove behind, and instead just carry our MSR Pocket Rockets.

I will never EVER leave for even a short day hike without this stove and a dehydrated meal in my pack again.

Campfire Cooking: Steak Dinner, Hobo Style!

So easy, and so worth it!

NOTE: We did this on a pretty cold, snowy night while lean to camping. This easy dinner on a cold, snowy a lean! :)

Get the recipe on the blog!

The Outdoors...Indoors

I don't know about where you are, but here we have seen negative temps way too often! We still get out when we can, although our outings are shorter and less remote when the mercury drops below zero.

Even when we are stuck indoors, we look for activities to keep us inspired, motivated, and engaged with the outdoors, especially for Dora! Movies, games, and reading, we really do live and breathe our outdoor lifestyle.

Movie Pick: Journey On The Wild Coast

Join Erin McKittrick and Bretwood "Hig" Higman On a 4,000-mile backpacking trip along the coast from Seattle to the Aleutians. These are two amazing people who represent the true spirit of adventure - I was blown away by their positive words and actions despite some terribly difficult terrain, weather, wildlife encounters, lost/left behind gear, and other mishaps. To be half as awesome as they are would be 100 times more awesome than most other adventurers.

Erin and Hig are not just explorers - they are advocates for the wild places they love. Along the way they get a little into the history and the future of the places they travel: waterways once exploding with wild Alaskan Salmon now home only to farmed, non-native fish, massive clear-cut forests, and receding glaciers to name a few.

There are a few curses (not liberal use, but a few here and there as they face some pretty tough conditions) so you may want to preview before watching with the kids.

This is a film that any outdoor lover will enjoy!

Included with your Amazon Prime membership, or, support their work directly by picking up a copy and checking out what they've been up to since this trek on their website:

Family Game Time: KNOT So Fast!

This game is a hoot, and it teaches a valuable skill! Race against each other and/or the hourglass and be the first to master various knots. Forty challenges!! Get KNOT So Fast on
