September 27, 2018: 9th anniversary of assassination of Adolfo Ich (& emergency house-building project – Angelica Choc & family)

Rights Action is trying to raise $11,500 for activities commemorating the life and work of Adolfo Ich, assassinated September 27, 2009; and for an emergency house-building project for the family of Angelica Choc.
  • Matching donor: for donations (up to total of $20,000) made by September 24, 2018
  • Rights Action September 2018 newsletter (including list of projects and work funded in 2018), “What’s going on? It is probably linked to the unjust global economy, in the unjust nation state system”, https://mailchi.mp/rightsaction/whats-going-on-september-2018-newsletter
Since the assassination of her husband Adolfo Ich in September 2009, Angelica Choc has been at the forefront of the struggles of the Mayan Q’eqchi’ people in defense of community, human rights and the environment; and at the forefront of struggles for justice in Canadian and Guatemala courts against Hudbay Minerals and CGN (Guatemala Nickel Companies) for the killing of Adolfo and other cases of mining repression.

Emergency-house building Project
After the killing of Angelica’s nephew Hector Choc on March 31, 2018, in what was apparently an attempt on the life of Angelica’s son Jose Ich, Angelica decided she could no longer live full-time in their home village of El Estor.

Assassination of nephew of Angelica Choc, plaintiff in Hudbay Minerals lawsuits. Indications are the murderers were seeking to kill José Ich, son of Angélica Choc, and witness in Hudbay lawsuits
Statement by Choc and Ich families, through Rights Action, April 11, 2018

With support from Rights Action, Angelica was able to by a piece of land in a Q’eqchi’ community near the city of Coban, some 4 hours from El Estor.  Now, we are trying to raise $10,000 to help Angelica and her family build the basic structure of a house on their new property.  (Full proposal on request.)
