A Mayan Q’eqchi’ fisherman shot dead leaves questions for Swiss-based Solway Investment Group and its (formerly Hudbay Minerals-owned) mine in Guatemala

This photo of Carlos Maaz, a Q’eqchi’ fisherman shot dead in 2017, leaves serious questions for the Swiss-based Solway Investment Group and its mine in Guatemala that was formerly owned by Hudbay Minerals and Skye Resources of Canada.
Patterns of injustice that repeat: The global economy operating normally
This moving article and accompanying photos –by the “Green Blood” project– addresses mining company / Guatemalan state violence, environmental devastation and human rights violations caused by the Swiss-based company Solway Investment Group (https://solwaygroup.com/) and its Guatemalan subsidiary CGN.

Solway bought CGN from Hudbay Minerals in 2011.

While mining repression continues unabated today in the Maya Q’eqchi’ region of eastern Guatemala, Hudbay Minerals and CGN are being sued in precedent-setting lawsuits in Canadian courts for mining repression (the killing of a community leader, gang-rape of 11 women villagers, shooting-paralyzing of a local farmer) that occurred when Hudbay and Skye Resources were trying to operate the mine from 2004-2011.
