Venezuela Coverage Takes Us Back to Golden Age of Lying About Latin America

“The US administration and corporate media simply resort to the most extreme lying about Latin America since the Reagan administration wars of the 1980s. (Mark Cook)
“If you are not careful, the press will have you hating the people being repressed and loving the people doing the repressing.” (Malcolm X)

Rights Action commentary
What does U.S.-Canadian illegal interventionism in Venezuela have to do with Honduras and Guatemala?
Rights Action continues to share information about the illegal, harmful and deadly U.S. & Canadian-led interventionism in Venezuela.  It is wrong in its own right, and it impacts directly and negatively on the work and struggles of our partner community groups in Honduras and Guatemala.
The attempted overthrow of the government of Venezuela is –in Rights Action’s perspective– fundamentally about returning to power a pro- global business government that will re-privatize Venezuela’s vast oil, gas and mineral deposits.  The oil, gas and mining companies and investors that will most benefit are from the U.S. and Canada.
As part of the media/information campaign to ‘legitimize’ the illegal economic, political and [likely] military interventions happening right now, the U.S. and Canada formed the ‘Lima Group’ whose “democratic allies” include corrupt, repressive, anti-democratic governments from Honduras, Guatemala, Haiti, Brazil and beyond.
As U.S. and Canadian officials do photo ops with these “democratic” governments of the Americas, and with self-appointed “president” Guaido of Venezuela, conditions of corruption and repression in Guatemala and Honduras have worsened.  As many, if not more forced migrants have fled Honduras and Guatemala in 2019 than in 2018, but their plight and the reasons they flee are not “newsworthy”, so as not to expose the lie of the U.S. & Canadian created and controlled ‘Lima Group’.
As Rights Action continues –as best we can- to support the courageous community / human rights / environmental defense struggles of our partner groups in Guatemala and Honduras, it is crucial that we challenge in every way possible the illegal interventionism of the U.S. and Canada in Venezuela.
In the measure that we can expose the hypocrisy and illegal actions of the U.S. and Canada, this will –in turn- expose the true nature of the U.S. and Canada’s economic, political and military relations with the repressive, corrupt governments in power in Haiti, Brazil, Honduras and Guatemala.

Venezuela Coverage Takes Us Back to Golden Age of Lying About Latin America
by Mark Cook, February 27, 2019

No light at the end of tunnel in Honduras and Guatemala
Even the small amounts of pressure that U.S. and Canadian governments were bringing to bear on the Honduran and Guatemala regimes to do something about exploitation and environmental harm, repression and violence, corruption and impunity have stopped. Now, Guatemala and Honduras are presented as “democratic allies” of the U.S. and Canadian efforts to economically strangle, politically and propagandistically weaken Venezuela and oust its democratically elected government.
Rights Action (U.S. & Canada)
Rights Action funds human rights, environmental and territorial defense organizations in Guatemala and Honduras; we provide relief funds to victims of political repression, health harms and natural disasters; we expose and work to hold accountable the U.S. and Canadian governments, companies and investors, international actors (World Bank, etc.) that cause and profit from the repression, environmental harms and human rights violations.
