April 13, 2019: Family and community members bury Señor Irene Montoya in the Azacualpa Cemetery which has been under attack by Aura Minerals, U.S. mining company (that retains offices in Canada).

One more dead buried in disputed Azacualpa Cemetery
(Information from Azacualpa community members in resistance, April 15, 2019)
Even as MINOSA (owned by U.S. company Aura Minerals) continues to try and illegally opérate a gold mine in La Unión, Copán, Honduras – including the wholesale destruction of the Azacualpa Cemetery and community, …
Azacualpa Cemetery hill.  Since 2016, Aura Minerals/MINOSA has been trying illegally to exhume all the bodies buried here, to get at the gold below, and further up the ridge.

… family members of Señor Irene Montoya, 75 years old (who died the day before), decided to properly bury him in the community cemetery.  “We buried him here because it is our cemetery and our loved one has to be with his sisters and brothers and family members”, said family member Pedro Rodriguez.
Behind, one sees a number of illegally exhumed burial sites.
Since 2016, Aura Minerals/MINOSA has been trying to exhume some 2000 cadavers buried for up to 200 years, so as to get at the gold beneath the cemetery and further up the mountain range.  There are community legal challenges in the courts, trying to put a halt to Aura/MINOSA’s destruction of their Cemetery and Community.
