New reports
Floods, homelessness, crop devastation
Tambogrande and other communities in Piura are suffering devastation caused by severe rains that have caused massive flooding.  Beginning in February, and continuing as of the writing of this appeal, the floods have killed hundreds, left 10s of thousands homeless and ruined the crops of more the 20,000 small farmers.  Roads have been washed away, bridges collapsed, and prices for basic items have spiked.
Tropico Seco & Ulises Garcia
Some North Americans will know of Ulises Garcia from the documentary film “Tambogrande: Mango, Murder and Mining”, by Stephanie Boyd and Ernesto Cabellos.  Ulises is from Tambogrande, Piura, and now lives in Markham, Ontario.  Along with his father, Godofredo Garcia, Ulises was at the forefront of a community environmental defense struggle in the 90s, early 2000s, against the mining harms of Manhattan Minerals.  Godofredo was assassinated for his leadership role in this struggle.
Ulises is the Canada-based representative of Tropico Seco that is a Piura-based Association with members from Tambogrande, La Tortuga, Chulucanas, Morropon and Ayabaca.  Funds will be put directly in the hands of Tropcio Seco community organizers and will go towards immediate food relief, fresh water, medical support, tents and mosquito nets.  Tropico Seco is trying to raise $50,000 and immediately needs $20,000.
