Happy Holidays from the SkillSmart Team

As 2016 draws to a close it is good to reflect on those things that worked well, and those that didn’t achieve all that you’d hoped in an effort to improve on them in the coming year.  We were pleased to to be able to support our clients in their pursuit of hiring a diverse, talented and qualified workforce, and to support thousands of job seekers in their pursuit of new growth opportunities.  We saw the results of this effort with the opening of MGM National Harbor on December 8. An amazing new facility bringing economic growth to Prince Georges County, MD and the Washington, DC region and more than 4,000 outstanding new employees meeting the exciting challenges of a new job opportunity.  This is just one example of how SkillSmart's skills-based hiring platform and community building skills can really make a difference in increasing economic opportunity.

Candidly, as we look at things that haven’t worked as well, we struggle to understand why so many organizations continue to beat their head against the wall by pursuing the same hiring strategies that haven’t worked for decades rather than explore new approaches to build a more qualified workforce.  We will be working very hard in 2017 to share the results of our efforts with our growing client base to help organizations overcome their fear of change and minimize their frustration with the skills gap to increase opportunities for growth.

We at SkillSmart want to thank you for your continued support and wish you peace and prosperity during this holiday season and the coming year.

Best wishes,
Mike, Jason and the SkillSmart Team
MGM Springfield Career Launch

SkillSmart at MGM National Harbor's Opening Night

SkillSmart was excited to attend the Grand Opening of the new MGM National Harbor Resort and Casino on December 8. The buzz created by the D.C. area’s first casino brought over 100,000 visitors through the doors on the opening weekend. So far, MGM has successfully hired about 4,000 individuals to their workforce, half of which were local residents. We are proud to be a part of this effort, with over 14,000 users signing up for SkillSmart in order to explore potential opportunities with MGM.

SkillSmart will continue its proud partnership with MGM as the company has started construction on its new resort in Springfield, MA scheduled to open in 2018. Together with MGM we have already begun listing opportunities which will become available in the near future.
SkillSmart Partners with Milwaukee Bucks

There is more cause for enthusiasm at SkillSmart as we begin a new partnership with the Milwaukee Bucks NBA Franchise. Both SkillSmart and the Bucks share the common goal of enriching the workforce of local communities. As part of this relationship, SkillSmart will help prospective employees find training for employment, and match qualified individuals with available positions.

Kapor Capital People Ops Tech Competition

SkillSmart was honored to be selected as a finalist from more than a hundred applications to the Kapor Capital People Ops Tech Competition for companies addressing the growing disparities in the human capital management space. Though we didn't win the competition, we made some amazing contacts and Jason did win the award for all-time best improvisation when the PowerPoint crashed.

Season of Giving with SkillSmart

As part of SkillSmart’s goal of creating opportunities within local communities, we have established a relationship with two local nonprofit organizations: Covenant House, Washington and Identity, Inc. Since 1995, Covenant House has opened its doors to the D.C. area’s homeless youth. Serving over 900 youths per year, Covenant House provides each youth with educational programs, vocational training, and community outreach services.

Identity, Inc is a Montgomery County Latino youth empowerment organization. Identity provides these youth with programs focused on supporting the physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being of the students. Many of these students lack an adapt control of the English language which has made school extremely difficult, and severely limited job opportunities. We encourage those who can to donate to these selfless organizations.
