SA - Urgent Mental Health Care Centre (UMHCC)
Opening in Adelaide during February, this 'Peer-First, Peer-Last' service will offer an important alternative to presenting at ED for mental health support. It will be open 7 days, from 12pm to 12am. Initial referrals will come from SA Health triage, RAH ED, police and ambulance, with community referrals and a walk-in service operating from April 2021. Read more
WA - Step Up/Step Down Services
New community-based mental health step up/step down services are being commissioned in WA. They provide short term residential care for people following discharge from hospital, or support those in the community to avoid a possible hospitalisation. There are 4 services currently in Joondalup, Rockingham, Albany, Bunbury, with Broome and Karratha planned for the future, and Geraldton and Kalgoorlie due to commence in February 2021. Read more

HelpingMinds have been appointed by the WA Mental Health Commission to collaboratively establish the WA Recovery College Alliance. This will be a state-wide college that will combine the expertise of lived and professional experience, to empower people with an interest in learning and developing their mental health and wellbeing. This article in Science Daily reviews the research findings published in Jan 2021 by Carla Sharp, PhD (Uni of Houston, Texas) entitled The Course of Borderline Psychopathology in Adolescents with Complex Mental Health Problems: An 18 Month Longitudinal Follow-up Study. "It sends a message to clinicians about : 'Don't put your head in the sand!' If the pathology is there, diagnose it and treat it with your best evidence-based treatment," said Sharp emphatically.
