Treating Borderline Personality Disorder

The Conversational Model - 'The Metaphor of Play'
Image The Metaphor of Play The conversational model was expanded by Australian psychiatrist Professor Russell Meares, who dedicated his professional life to developing effective psychotherapy, with a particular interest in BPD. Margie Darcy outlined the Conversational Model for BPD at a recent BPD MHPN meeting in Adelaide. Expressions of interest are being taken for a Reading Group to explore 'The Metaphor of Play'. Research Project - Voice hearing & Trauma
The Recall Study will evaluate a trauma-focussed treatment for voice hearing experiences. These treatments involve talking through traumatic events in order to process the emotion and meaning of the events and reduce their impact in the present day.
The Voices Clinic at Swinburne University of Technology are conducting this project in Melbourne, and participants will be reimbursed for time and travel. Details

Training - Family Connections for Leaders - August 2018

It was developed by Dr. Alan Fruzzetti and Dr. Perry Hoffman and is coordinated by NEA.BPDAust. The training will be led by Clinical Psychologists Dr Carolyn Bright and Dr Sian Jeffery. DBT Skills Groups
Uni of Sydney Gambling Treatment & Research Clinic

These 12-week DBT groups are held in a gambling clinic, so priority places will be held for people with gambling problems, but they are open to all who want to learn DBT Skills. Groups will have a mindfulness component, some distress tolerance, and vary between offering a focus on either emotion regulation or interpersonal effectiveness. Calm Kids Central
Do you work with or have children aged 5-11 who struggle with anxiety, worry, coping with friendships at school, managing frustration, attention or following instructions?  Would like support, supervision, ideas and help online? Calm Kid Central is an online program run by child psychologists - that helps kids feel calm, confident and co-operative. They have recently been funded by the Australian Federal Government (via Adelaide Primary Health Network) to provide completely free access for one year to 325 families in the Adelaide Metropolitan area.  At this stage, places are limited to families who have a government issued Health Care Card. Image BPD ConferenceThe National Borderline Personality Disorder Conference will be held 10-11 September this year at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, Brisbane, Qld. The Pre-Conference/Training Day for mental health clinicians will be held Monday 10th, followed by the main conference day on Tuesday 11th. The conference will include a number of keynote presentations and Breakout sessions for everyone who wants to make a difference for those living with BPD. Schema Focused Therapy (SFT)
Compared to traditional short term cognitive therapy, SFT places more emphasis on: childhood origins of problems and working directly with associated memories, core schemas to drive formulation and treatment, experiential or affect-based techniques, use of the therapy relationship to assess psychological themes and provide corrective experiences and use of ‘mode’ theory.
