Minnesota's primary election is coming up soon, on August 9th. In this election, Minnesotans will have the opportunity to vote for governor and various seats in the U.S. House as well as the State House and Senate. Early Voting has started and is open until August 8th. Whether you've recently moved or because of recent redistricting, it's an excellent time to find out who represents you, what they stand for, and if your district is on the ballot. Make sure that you're registered to vote, make a plan to vote early, by mail, or on election day, and find a sample ballot to know who you can expect to see on your ballot next month.

All voters will have these races on their general election ballot:

  • U.S. Representative
  • Governor & Lt. Governor
  • Secretary of State
  • State Auditor
  • Attorney General
  • State Senator
  • State Representative
  • Judicial seats

The CROWN Act has been passed in Massachusetts after a unanimous vote by the House and State Senate. The CROWN Act is an acronym which stands for creating a respectful and open world for natural hair. As of right now, 18 states have passed the CROWN act which bans discrimination of natural and protective hairstyles most often worn by Black women. Massachusetts governor Charlie Baker of the Republican party signed the bill into law this past Tuesday, July 26th.

In Minnesota, the CROWN act has not been passed, but there is strong support from different groups throughout the state. The Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage, which is a part of the state’s government, has expressed very vocal support for the addition of the CROWN Act to the Minnesota Human Rights Act. Passing the CROWN Act would help bring clarity and greater transparency to the Minnesota Human Rights Act as it specifically prohibits discrimination based on natural hair and protective hairstyles, which would supplement the existing prohibition of discrimination based on race.
