The Chicago Architectural Center (formerly Chicago Architectural Foundation) has announced its sites for the 2018 Open House Chicago. Hyde Park Union Church is one of the Hyde Park sites. Our sanctuary will be open for tours Saturday, October 13th and Sunday, October 14th from 1 - 5 pm.

We need your help!
All Volunteers get lunch and a free T-Shirt!
Kathy Williams is recruiting volunteers to help with the tours. You can volunteer one or both days. We will need four volunteers each day. We can expect 300 plus visitors each day. There are several other churches in Hyde Park participating. Youth are welcome to volunteer! Send Kathy an email at the address below or leave a note in the Sunday collection plate. email@example.com
Driving to church this Sunday? Please be aware that there will be road closures in Hyde Park from 8:15-10:30 a.m. due to the Comer 5K Race for Kids. Specifically, 57th, Stony Island, and the Midway will be affected.
Lend a hand at the church work day!
The property and finance committee is calling all willing hands to help with maintenance tasks like digging, replacing light bulbs, painting, and organization. We will meet at 10 am at church on Saturday October, 20. Wear your old clothes and come help spruce up your church! Please contact Rachel (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you can help out.
Pastor Search Update:
The Pastoral Search Committee is nearing the conclusion of our process, and we hope to schedule a candidating weekend in the next 4 to 6 weeks. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we make final decisions.
We remember those facing health problems: Fred Anderson, Alice's daughter-in-law, Louise's son, Christine Bailey's niece, and Noema's mom. Ginni Cook never did have her surgery and found out her heart is doing quite well! We still pray for a clear diagnosis and for health coverage. Our prayers are also with their loved ones and caregivers.
We remember those who mourn, including the Bryant family who just lost Shaun's Aunt.
We remember the hurricane victims and the search committee of HPUC as they do their work.
The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.
Learn More about St. Martin de Porres
Jennifer Adams has been developing a relationship with St. Martin de Porres' new leadership, and we wanted to bring them to the church to tell us about who they are today and how we might be able to contribute and support their mission. Join us for second hour on October 14 to hear more!
Last July, a group of friends began to look for a way to honor the wonderful jazz pianist Willie Pickens and his wife, Irma. Great in the world of music, they were also great human beings. What we came up with is a kind of "Pickens Corner" with Irma and Willie's home as its focus.
Here is what is about to happen:
1) On October 17, the muralist and friend of the Pickens, Desi Mundo, will begin painting across from the Pickens' home between the auditorium doors of Ray School. His work will be finished on October 20.
2) Thanks to the cooperation of Alderman Leslie Hairston and her Chief of Staff, Kimberly Webb, the street where Irma and Willie lived for 40 years will be given the honorary street name of Irma and Willie Pickens Way
3) A brass plaque memorializing Irma and Willie will be presented by the Hyde Park Historical Society and attached to their home.
There will be a celebration on Sunday, October 21 at 2:00 pm in the Auditorium of Ray School. If you would like to join church members attending this celebration, please talk to Jennifer Adams or Alice Mulberry.

Coffee Hour at Hyde Park Union Church is a special time for fellowship after service on Sundays.
Please let the Fellowship Committee know that you value this tradition by volunteering to host a coffee hour or by donating to sponsor a coffee hour.
Hosting involves bringing light snacks for approximately 20-30 people, setting up before the service, and assisting with clean up afterwards. There will be a member of the fellowship committee on duty to help you navigate the kitchen and assist with set up/clean up. To schedule a time to host, email Jennifer Adams, at firstname.lastname@example.org or sign up on the schedule in the social hall.
If you prefer to sponsor coffee hour by donating, please write a check to HPUC for any amount. ($25 will cover the cost of single coffee hour), and place check in the offering, or to give it to a member of the Fellowship Committee. Your donations are tax-deductible.
Thank you for your support.
Our interim minister is Keith Cerk, whose responsibilities include preaching, Sunday worship and staff supervision. In addition to his presence on Sunday, he will be available by phone and in person upon individual request. He can be reached at 708-606-8421 and via email: email@example.com.
