A Word from the Pastors
February is Black History Month, and this week I’ve been thinking about Audre Lorde, who described herself as “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet.” I took one of her poems to the jail this week, where I volunteer as a chaplain, and used it as a centering piece for group reflection. The poem is “If you come softly.”

If you come softly
If you come as softly
As the wind within the trees
You may hear what I hear
See what sorrow sees.
If you come as lightly
As threading dew
I will take you gladly
Nor ask more of you.

You may sit beside me
Silent as a breath
Only those who stay dead
Shall remember death.
And if you come I will be silent
Nor speak harsh words to you.
I will not ask you why now.
Or how, or what you do.

We shall sit here, softly
Beneath two different years
And the rich between us
Shall drink our tears.
As the group reflected on the poem, several people brought up an image of God sitting next to us, speaking softly to us, steadfastly loving us. It is an image that has stayed with me and brought me comfort in the midst of a hectic week.

I thank God for those like Audre Lorde who stir us with their words, who help us notice something new about this wild world around us. And it is my prayer that this week you will feel God sitting softly with you. Wherever you find yourself, whatever you are doing, know that God is moving gently and surely by your side.

After a difficult period of tests, Craig Krell has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the esophagus and the liver. The doctors are exploring a newer treatment plan involving chemotherapy but in the meantime, Craig and his medical team are trying to manage his disease and treat the pain. This has left him unable to do very much and unable to help out his father as he has been doing. Craig and Gene welcome your prayers, cards, emails, and phone calls.

The congregation is also helping with meals for Gene and Craig Krell.  If you can help out, please click on this link to sign up

Eugene and his family welcome food on any day. Food will not only support Eugene and Craig, but also Ruth and her family as caregivers. We are aiming to provide 1 - 2 meals per week.

Food can either be dropped off at Eugene's or at Ruth's house. Her address is: 5450 S Ridgewood Ct. Please call either Pastor Sarah or Ruth to coordinate drop off. Ruth's number is (773) 571 - 3351.

Psalm 33:13-15

From heaven the Lord looks down
    and sees all humankind;

    who considers everything they do
