Happy New Year and Hello 2019! The lectionary text for this Sunday seems to invites us into the New Year:
“Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.”
The prophet Isaiah calls us to “Arise” and to “Shine!” In what areas of life have you been in a slump? The imperative to “Arise” and to “Shine” implies that we have agency to do just that. It implies that there is a light within us that can shine brighter than it has been shining! We believe this “light” that “has come” and the “glory of the Lord” that the prophet speaks of is Jesus Christ.
Indeed, at the Christmas Eve service we sang: “Walk in the light, beautiful light. Come where the dew drops of mercy shine bright. Shine all around us by day and by night. Jesus the Light of the World!”
While life can be challenging, very challenging, we hear the prophet encouraging God’s people to take some steps to “Arise”, i.e., move forward, and to “Shine” with the light of Jesus.
Our prayer for you, for 2019, is that you feel the presence of the Lord, daily, and that this presence inspires you, heals you, affirms you, and guides and directs you to live and to love! Happy New Year!
Yours in Christ!
