July Potluck Meeting
People brought a wonderful assortment of delicious plant-based dishes to our July meeting. From soups to salads to desserts--hot & cold--everyone seemed to relish the opportunity to try a variety of foods and to share recipes and cooking tips. I thank everyone for participating, with a special nod to those from the Blue Zone series of classes for being part of the occasion!
Related to The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who've Lived the Longest is Dr. Michael Greger's video: "Only about one in 10,000 people make it to be 100 years old. What’s their secret?" (see Animal Protein Compared to Cigarette Smoking).  As he shows (in his usual engaging yet informative style) the “longevity gene" is turned on & off by what we eat.
The August issue of PlantPure Magazine is available, and our group picture is in it!  The article is on pages 10-11.

August Meeting

One thing we will discuss next week: What topics do you want to focus on for the Fall months?
  • Think about what you want to learn or do, and what you can teach or share with others.
  • Also, does anyone want to go to Morris Farm in Irwin for pick-your-own organic veggies? I talked to the owners, who would welcome us; the evenings are Mon/Wed/Fri, 6:30-dark. (You also can buy their produce at the Murrysville Farmers Market, Thurs. 3-7 pm.)

7 Keys to Success on a Healthy Vegan Diet

1. Make starches/fruit the basis of your diet for fuel & energy.
2. Eat foods you enjoy. Don’t worry about individual nutrients.
3. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Focus on the big changes, i.e. switching from meat/milk/eggs to whole-plant foods.
4. When eating out--check online & call ahead.
5. When vacationing--travel to places where you can get great plant-based food.
6. Be a patient advocate--share your enthusiasm when the time is right.
7. Find your plant-based tribe. Surround yourself with like-minded people.
