THE ADDITIONAL TOUCHES - overseas influences - clothes and much more...

David Jones

So many of us have been waiting for this fashion-focused icon to cross the Tasman and offer us the treats that our Australian cousins are accustomed to. Now we have our own flagship store in Wellington. The former Kirkcaldie and Stain’s has been given a $20 million face lift and is wowing customers with its range of local and international fashion labels – a glamorous and world-class store with stock to impress all shoppers. I can’t wait to take my clients shopping there. And it’s about to happen …

I’ll be in Wellington mid-November to take clients shopping at David Jones or any other Wellington store. Email Susan for a Wellington appointment between November 14 – 20.

the additional, and essential touch...

Accessories are high fashion – shoes in particular and scarves and all forms of embellishment, necklaces, long earrings, colourful handbags. So update your current wardrobe with some colourful, gorgeous accessories. Patterned shoes are a must this season. Footwear is colourful, patterned, metallic, thick-soled – they are real statements so best foot forward to update your wardrobe.
Email or phone Susan for an accessory appointment.
Accessories mean more than something you’re wearing. Hair and makeup are also accessories, adding to our appearance.

Finding the right hairdresser can be a long journey – I was lucky enough to have the one great hairdresser for a lifetime until he retired last year. But I’ve been thrilled to discover Sarah, who owns TONI &  Co at 266 Manukau Road. She is a great cutter and I’ve been impressed how particular and professional she has been getting my cut and colour right. The salon has a lovely friendly atmosphere and the staff are all excellent. For the month of November, Sarah is doing a generous SPECIALcut and colour for $145. TONI & Co - phone (09) 520 2992.

Jewellery is eye catching accessory that can transform a plain dress or top into a WOW outfit and I’m  delighted to discover a relatively new range of amazing and beautiful jewellery inspired by an Auckland woman, Helen Thompson-Carter.

The range is FABULEUX  VOUS - it is jewellery that will certainly make you look fabulous. Helen designs the collections and they are beautiful, with great attention to detail and craftsmanship, from quality sterling silver statements to playful colourful fashion pieces. Each collection has a theme and each piece is elegant and timeless and a wonderful addition to any wardrobe. There are some unusual twists like the daisy silver ring that flips to reveal another colour, so you can co-ordinate it with your clothing choice. A clever necklace can be worn 10 different ways.

FABULEUX VOUS  is offering my clients 10% discount when you purchase from her website. To get the discount go to, select your item and put ASSTYLE in the CODE window, and click the arrow. Thank you, Helen.

is an essential accessory – the first step in good grooming.  And no outfit has the wow factor if the wearer is not groomed. One of the added benefits of regular facials from a good beauty therapist is that she keeps you up to date with all the latest trends and procedures. Colleen Francis from VITAL SKIN in Remuera is one of those top therapists. She has just added a Dermapen Cryo treatment to her stable of wonderful and effective procedures. It is a quick, painless, and effective way to remove pigmentation from the skin. Colleen also offers micro-needling, which is a great skin-rejuvenator. Phone Vital Skin (09) 523 2051 for one of her treatments. Your skin will thank you for it.

is a most important accessory – and well defined eyebrows are a must for everyone. Eyebrows – take a 'brow' on the current beauty stage. One of the most important, and often neglected, makeup area is the eyebrows. Well-defined brows act as a face contourer and help open up the eye area and balance the face. Or in the words of  makeup brand founder, Bobbi Brown, “brows are the unsung heroes of the face.”  Brows have become a fashion accessory and there are a host of products to help you create the perfect brow.

The BENEFIT  range has been “transforming brows since 1976” and I’ve been experimenting with a few of their new products as I over plucked my eyebrows when I was a teenager and they’ve never really grown back properly.
Conditioning primer is a gel that tames and conditions brows and enhances the colour of the brow product and extends its wear and that’s what we all want a brow that lasts all day and night! You can even wear the gel at night to condition your brows. It is a very easy to use pen and when the product is finished the pen with its softly ridged applicator will be a useful makeup tool.
  • KA BROW! A cream-gel in stylish container with built-in brush. Better to use cautiously and build up the colour gradually and suggest dabbing the tip of the brush on your hand first to avoid too much product on first contact with the brow.  Always start by applying on the thickest part of your brow and apply in the natural direction of your hair growth. I think this product is harder to use than a powder, which is more forgiving, but the result is good. Handle with care and precision.
  • HIGH BROW Soft brow highlighting pencil is an instant brow lift to open up the eyes. It goes on smoothly and blends to a barely visible, but most effective lustre. Love this pencil.

I’ve always subscribed to the theory that less is more the KISS theory, Keep it Simple, but I have become a big fan of primers – they really do make a big difference to the look and last qualities of  a foundation.
  • JANE IREDALE’s Smooth Affair has anti-aging properties, evens the skin tone and gives a luminous glow. The foundation will glide on. Although primers are colourless, some have a tendency to look a bit white. Smooth Affair is perfect for all skin tones.
  • BY TERRY’s Hyaluronic Eye Primer
By Terry’s Hyaluronic Eye Primer, is the perfect base for eye shadow. With plumping hyaluronic acid and a tinted base, this light mousse reduces fine lines and puffiness.
