Launching Friendship Circle of VA's Monthly Newsletter

I am so excited to announce the launch of our new monthly newsletter - The Circle! Friendship Circle of VA (FCVA) has grown so much in the past 4 years. Now we are pleased to keep everyone up to date on all of the amazing programs we offer - from our weekly Friends@Home matches to Team Friendship, Junior Board, Action Club, and so much more!

We are also proud to offer free or reduced-price events around the community and help make them accessible for people with disabilities and their families. As one parent told me, "Before Friendship Circle, we never went to community events - but now my daughter with autism has friends everywhere we go!"  We are honored to be changing our community one friendship at a time and we are thrilled that you are part of the Circle!  Thank you and happy holidays!

FCVA Action Club learned about Service Dogs

The FCVA Action Club is a new INCLUSIVE group open to girls ages 8 years old and up.  The group meets on the last Sunday of every month.  Thank you to Rosemary Seltzer for bringing the idea to FCVA and Andrea Nachman for leading the group each month.

This past month, the Action Club met Riley from Fetch a Cure's Pixie's Pen Pals program. They learned the important roles these dogs play in our community.  In addition, the girls made dog treats from scratch and donated them to a local shelter.

You can still sign up for Action Club!!  Click here to sign-up.

Moving from
Awareness to Acceptance
Evening of Acceptance Feb. 9

"I never knew I was disabled
until I was 12 years old"

Earlier this year, Friendship Circle of Virginia was proud to sponsor Richmond’s first ever Awareness Day, highlighting people in our community with disabilities and why this discussion is meaningful to all of us. This year we are taking the next step and are moving from awareness to acceptance on February 9th.

We are delighted to welcome our guest speakers: Joseph Bensmihen, MSW, RG, (pictured above), who is running for Congress in Florida and also has spastic cerebral palsy, and local self advocate and disability consultant, Matthew Shapiro.

Don't miss this amazing evening on February 9, from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Dessert reception following at Chabad of Virginia, 212 Gaskins Road.

Friendship Circle is passionate about building bridges throughout our community and encourages all Richmonders to join us. Bring your friends!

Team Friendship

Friendship Circle offers so much to our community and is proud to do it for FREE!

To help us continue to do so, one of our major annual fundraisers is to join with Team Friendship and run the half/full Miami Marathon in January. Richmond is proud to have a growing Team Friendship for the second year in a row!  An important part of the Team Friendship experience is spending an incredible race weekend together with other Friendship Circles from around the country!  Last year, Team Friendship Virginia ran, walked, and raised almost $18,000, allowing us to create many new outstanding programs this year.  We now have more advocates and ambassadors for FCVA are looking forward to our run at the end of January 2016.

Our 20 Team Friendship Richmond runners have their own fundraising pages. Click here to support and donate to Team Friendship. They need your help!!!

We would like to thank our Corporate Sponsors: Markel Insurance, April and Joe Niamtu, Caffespresso, Lucky Foot and Riverside Outfitters.

Friends@Home Spotlight
Meet Eric Buzzard and his friends -- The Two Jacobs: Jacob Zedd and Jacob Lehman. The boys began Friends@home with Eric last Spring 2015. According to Eric's parents, Samantha and Michael Buzzard, Eric’s "new friends are really great and we are so appreciative of them and not only because of the time they take with our son, but also the overall positive impact it has on our whole family."
