Medicaid Matters

The past month has been a whirlwind in the life and history of Medicaid. Medicaid is so much more than a health program -- it's a lifeline that funds long term supports and services allowing people with disabilities to live full lives. More than 10 million people with disabilities rely on Medicaid to live and work in their communities through the utilization of home and community-based services.

On the national front, the end of July marked the 52nd anniversary of Medicaid AND the defeat of a Senate Health Care Bill that would have resulted in cuts of $200 billion to Medicaid. Disability advocates won this round, but there are more battles ahead.

On the state front, in early August the NC Department of Health and Human Services issued a proposed program design for Medicaid managed care in North Carolina. This proposed design was developed using feedback collected by the Department from stakeholders across the state.

Review the proposed design here and share your additional feedback to the Department by September 8. The Department will submit a revised waiver to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services this fall.

Listen in Color

Gateway Gallery was awash in color and sound for the opening reception of THE COLOR OF SOUND, featuring original work by the Artists of Gateway Studios and special guest artist, Tammy Willard. This unique and imaginative show explores the relationship between color and sound.

Our color-filled gallery walls were enhanced by a variety of music performed by The Enrichment Center Percussion Ensemble plus guest musicians Carmen Granger on viola, and Jonathan Wiseman's Jazz Quartet. We also enjoyed a special dance performance by our Dance students and delicious, colorful refreshments prepared by our Culinary Arts students.

The Color of Sound will be on display through September 15.

Board Members On Board

The start of a new fiscal year each July brings a new board of directors. We're exceedingly grateful for these volunteer community leaders who give so much of their time, talent and treasure to support The Enrichment Center. Patton Lowe, of BB&T, is this year's Board President. Please visit our Website here for a complete list of current board members.

One of our former board members, Matt Potter, was honored on July 27 by Disability Rights North Carolina as a "Champion for Equality and Justice" for his work improving the lives of people with disabilities as an advocate, leader and builder of community.

Celebrating With Ryan's

We're so grateful to Ryan's Restaurant and all who voted for The Enrichment Center in July during their 40th anniversary Community Giveback Campaign. As one of the top-5 charities selected, we received a $1000 gift from Ryans.

Happy Anniversary, Ryan's!
