An Important Message to Our Community

End Anti-Asian Hate Speech and Behavior

In response to the increase in violent acts against Asian Americans, the San Mateo County Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools passed a joint resolution condemning anti-Asian hate speech and behavior.
These acts of violence and hate are unacceptable and have a profound and lasting impact on children. Join us in standing up against hate and creating caring and compassionate communities. Read the full resolution here

Violence Against Asian-Americans

In response to recent attacks to Asian-Americans in Atlanta, PBS has compiled a video list to learn more about how the recent attacks are affecting Asian-Americans and includes videos that shares the Asian-American Experience. Read and watch more here.

Design Meaningful Phonemic Experiences for Distance, Hybrid, Blended, and/or In-Person Learning

Phonological and Phonemic awareness are important aspects of reading foundations instruction. This resource, curated and compiled by the state Curriculum and Instruction Steering Committee (CISC), was designed to support educators' knowledge development of phonological and phonemic awareness instruction and provide examples of various strategies and routines that can be used to support your current instruction. The resources include professional learning and examples of how educators might design meaningful phonemic awareness experiences based on student data during distance, hybrid, blended, and/or in-person learning.

7 Tips for Breakout Room Success

Having students meet to work in small groups helps build community and fosters deeper learning.

Scholarship Opportunity
2021 Bay Area Gardeners Scholarship Foundation (BAGSF) Scholarships Application.

BAGSF provides financial support to low-income, underserved, and underrepresented students who are pursuing a college education. Additionally, we encourage AB540 recipients, undocumented, and first-generation to apply. The BAGSF scholarship application for the 2021 academic year will be open for submission from January 11, 2020. The deadline is April 04, 2021, by 11:59 pm. All applications MUST be submitted electronically. Read more here

Creativity and Mindfulness Corner
Connect Arts and Equity in Education
Explore how equity has shown up in arts education in the times of distance learning.
Join San Mateo County Office of Education's Arts and Restorative Learning Coordinator, Michelle Holdt, and colleagues to connect and make connections between arts making and equity in education. Please have paper, scissors, a glue stick and some markers/pens ready for the first meeting, so we can make art while we talk and  discuss how equity has shown up in our arts education work in the times of distance learning. These groups are drop-in and will be hands-on and interactive. Meetings are open to all teachers.

English Learner Roadmap Professional Development for Parents and Teachers

Parent Workshop 101. Families play a crucial role in the success of their children’s academics. Ensuring they are informed about the English Learner Roadmap will serve as an important bridge to foster stronger school relationships, personal investment, and robust implementation of the English Learner Roadmap. All print and media resources will be provided, in English and Spanish, so District and School Site personnel are able to empower families to support schools in centralizing the needs of English learners. This workshop is designed for Parent Liaisons and staff that work and engage with parents. Learn more and register here.

Teacher as Language Coach. How can teachers easily and effectively build language
proficiency for their EL/DLL students throughout their daily lessons? This two-hour interactive webinar, including one hour of pre-session asynchronous work, provides teachers with a set of practices that can be quickly integrated into existing lessons and practices, including Designated ELD. Aligned to Principle 2 of the EL Roadmap, participants will learn to effectively identify and address the strengths and needs of English learners by providing targeted scaffolds and supports to actively deepen students’ use of sophisticated academic language for speaking and writing. Teachers will be prepared with tools and resources that can be implemented the next day in their virtual and in-person classrooms. Learn more and register here.
