Werriwa eNewsletter

24 April 2020

Dear <<First Name>>

Welcome to this week’s newsletter, I hope you and your family are keeping well.

The current health advice still requires that we stay at home unless we need to do something essential; like shop for food, seek medical advice, go to work or exercise. While the current fall in new cases is encouraging we should not to be complacent and continue to follow the advice.

This Saturday is Anzac Day and unfortunately all public Anzac Day events have been cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. However there are many ways to still commemorate this important day which I have included in this week's eNewsletter below.

Do you have any questions, feedback or suggestions for this newsletter? Please email them to . I would love to hear from you. Keep safe.

Kind Regards

COVID-19 health advice

Please remember the following to keep you and your family safe:
  • Covering our coughs and sneezes with our elbow or a tissue;
  • Avoiding handshaking and other physical greetings;
  • Washing our hands often with soap and water and/or using alcohol-based hand sanitisers;
  • Regularly disinfecting high touch surfaces, such as tables, kitchen benches and doorknobs; and
  • Avoiding contact with others by staying more than 1.5 metres away.
If you are concerned about your health, or have any questions, please call your GP or the national Coronavirus Health Information Hotline on 1800 020 080 for advice. The line operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Anzac Day

I recognise all of the soldiers who have served our nation in the many theatres of war, from the Boer through to more recent deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. I thank them for their service and contribution to the Australia we now enjoy.

The RSL’s #lightupthedawn campaign invites residents to hold their own private commemorations at home from their driveways, yards, balconies or living rooms, with candle or torch at 6am following the televised dawn service. Find out more about the #lightupthedawn campaign here.

The ABC will broadcast a National Commemorative Service at the Australian War Memorial on radio, television, iview and social media, with a pre-service program from 5:00am AEST and Dawn Service proper at 5:30am.

The service will also be live streamed on the Australian War Memorial website, Facebook page and YouTube channel. Find the links to these pages below.

 We will remember them

JobKeeper rorts - make a tip off

With the JobKeeper wage subsidy starting to roll out, I am deeply concerned about media reports regarding bosses trying to abuse the scheme and rip off their workers.

If you believe an individual or business is not acting within the rules of COVID-19 measures, such as JobKeeper, contact your union or make a tip-off to the ATO by calling 1800 060 062 or completing the ATO Tip Off Form here.

Should I dip into my super?

Australians struggling financially due to the coronavirus pandemic can now access their superannuation.

You should seek financial advice before you make any decisions about your superannuation as it may have long term consequences for your retirement savings. You should not be bullied by anyone to access your super and financial advice can only be given by registered Financial Advisors.

Choice and Super Consumers Australia have produced this guide on what you need to know about accessing your super early and the consequences you can face. The guide runs through the pros and cons of accessing your super and details the risks involved, as well as answering frequently asked questions.

Council kerbside pick ups

Our local Councils are still providing their kerbside pick up services. There is no excuse for illegally dumping rubbish.

If you need to dispose of larger household items you can contact your local council to arrange a collection. Please find links below for details on large garbage kerbside pick-up for each Council in Werriwa:

Family and domestic violence

Police and support services are reporting a rise in family and domestic violence during the coronavirus lockdown.

If you or someone you know is impacted by family violence, call the NSW Domestic Violence Line on 1800 656 463 or the Mens' Referral Service on 1300 766 491.

Virgin Australia Airlines

It is in the national interest to save Virgin and ensure we have two strong major airlines come out of this crisis to assist with rebuilding our tourism sector and our economy.

Having two full service airlines, supported by budget partners and a network of smaller regional operators provides a better level of service, supports competition, and ensures that all Australians have access to air services at a price they can afford.

The impact of losing a national carrier would be significant as competition would disappear, meaning airfares will increase and less profitable routes would no longer be serviced.

More importantly, the 16,000 people that work for Virgin and their contractors would immediately be out of a job. This will also negatively impact the 600,000 Australians who work in tourism sector.

The Government should take an equity stake in the airline to ensure there are two major airlines in this country, to keep airfares affordable and to save 16,000 vital jobs.

I would like to convey my best wishes to everyone celebrating the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Ramadan for Australian Muslims is a month of deep spiritual reflection and an opportunity to renew your faith in God and the teachings of the Qur’an.

This period marks a time of a renewed dedication to a life of compassion, charity and selflessness; values at the centre of our modern multicultural society. I wish you a peaceful month of prayer and reflection.
