CEO News - Membership Growing
We have now reached one of the busiest periods in the horticulture calendar with gardeners getting their hands dirty and buying plants for Spring. This, of course, means sales should be picking up and I am sure after the cold wet winter we have had, this comes as much relief to many members who supply and sell plants.  [read more...]

Biosecurity & Quarantine Forum (Thursday 25th August)

Around 20 NGIWA members and guests from the DAFWA Biosecurity team came together for our inaugural Biosecurity and Quarantine Forum last month. Presentations included the future of biosecurity and the impact of not taking preventive measures, as well as import/export policies and quarantine regulations.

Speakers included Kevin Chennell, Shashi Sharma, Grant Jackson,
Dr Darryl Hardie and Simone Tuten. Presentations were of the highest level and members had a most informative morning.

Retailer's Night - Spring Is In The Air (Wednesday 31st August)
A fantastic evening was held at Waldecks Nursery in Stirling, who kindly hosted our "Spring Is In The Air" Retailers Night last month. This event was generously sponsored by Domus Nursery and Garden Centres Association of Australia. Around 40 members and guests enjoyed Mark Tucek's (Domus Nursery) presentation of new spring plant releases and Deryn Thorpe provided us with a great behind the scenes look into garden tourism and the rebirth of the Open Gardens scheme in WA. Everyone was treated to a special guest appearance from ABC Gardening Australia presenter Angus Stewart who spoke about his latest book on native gardens. The evening finished off nicely with freshly made pizzas and networking.
NextGen Propagation Workshop (Wednesday 7th September)
Our NextGen group (18-35 years) were treated to a fantastic propagation workshop at the Botanical Gardens and Parks Authority (Kings Park Nursery) on Sept 7th. Over 35 attended and were provided with an enthralling insight into propagating techniques led by Nursery Curator, Amanda Shade and staff from BGPA. Michael Gorman, our NextGen Co-ordinator, spoke about how NGIWA was focused on growing this group and thanked everyone for their great support. Big thanks to our industry partner, Water Corporation, for kindly sponsoring the event. Everyone agreed it was a terrific hands on experience!!

Member Spotlight - Perth Hills Veggie Co Pty Ltd

Twelve months ago whilst visiting the Pinjarra Garden Festival I met Paul Beveridge for the first time. Paul is the latest breed of growers aiming at the niche market of selling freshly grown vegetables to gardeners so that they can eat what they grow.

Paul admits quite openly he is not a horticulturist but an accountant by profession but in a space of twelve months from setting up his business, The Perth Hills Veggie Co has gone from strength to strength and his range of heirloom vegetables is growing too.

Tree Standards Researchers Visit To Benara Nurseries

The Levy funded project to undertake further research of tree stock balance parameters across all climatic regions of Australia has just been completed in WA.  The researchers spent a week measuring trees at three major tree growers including Benara Nurseries. The research project is headed up by Prof Mark Tjoelker from Western Sydney University in conjunction with Horticulture Innovation Australia.  These research trials to quantify root to shoot balance of nursery tree stock are underway across Australia’s major growing regions and to date nearly 7,000 trees have been evaluated across a range of container sizes from 20lt to – 2500lt.

Yates - A Fresh Fundraising Campaign for Schools and Sporting Groups
Yates have recently launched RAISE A PATCH, a healthier alternative for fundraising which focuses on selling seeds for veggie patches, herb pots and flower gardens, and one which raises twice as much money for schools or sporting clubs that they would normally earn. Television personality Grant Denyer is supporting the initiative. “Straight off the bat, the whole campaign was an absolute no-brainer for me to get involved with,” said Denyer. “School kids selling sweets never sat right with me as a parent. So the idea of them fundraising with seeds instead, getting out and about in the garden to grow veggies for their own dinner table, makes sense on so many levels."
